    I've known a few people over the years who have bought flame guns and from memory none have been especially impressed. They only destroy the top growth, so that may well kill some annual weeds....

    Cut Ribes and Forsythia to the ground? When?

    You could always try removing 1/3 of the growth to ground level, reduce another 1/3 by half and the last 1/3 a trim rather than a full hair cut.
