Bringing just to the top, because no reply in 5 days.The only thing I can contribute is that wildflowers and clay soil can work, but I would suggest you have a walk in your area and see what grows naturally. In my garden, ox-eye daisies don’t bother clay, but quadruple inside a year.

My niece on sandy soil planted 2 plants per bed (2), and when I had a garden day at her house, it took me 6 hours to get the mint out of all 4 beds. What ever it was, it had itself happily multiplied in just 2 years.

Definitely into the ground. I think that the trickiest part of propagating anything is getting the moisture level right, so it's a lot less hassle in-ground. All told it takes a year. Although they root quite quickly, I leave them to make sure that the root system is a decent size before moving...
