How about getting one of those wands that roast the weeds with a flame? Never tried one myself but it should work on gravel.

I have always done it when they first appear above soil in late Spring. At least then you can find the resting buds from which they grow.

I agree about Lewisias, they are usually planted in a wall so that rain doesn't collect in the rosette. You could try a feed, but I would only do it once. Maybe there isn't enough soil for the Sedum sieboldii (that's the first one)

Here's one I did, keeping it 12" away from the wall. Absolutely no need for membrane. The height of the earth on top solves drainage problems.

The only worry I'd have is that the laurel hedge will quickly start shading the alpines from the light. So you need to ensure that you use toughies like the plants mentioned above, and don't get carried away and tempted by more 'fancy' alpines or ones that really like sun like sempervivums. How...

Well, I am glad I opened this topic. A couple of days ago, one of the stems fell off. I was upset when it happened - even though I was expecting it. Goodness knows how I would have felt, if I hadn't been warned. There are five new rosettes growing near where the other was previously.
