Hi Plantaholic if its bedding plants you are after for a shady area then Busy Lizzies (Impatiens)are ideal and come in many different stunning colours and also very easy to take cuttings from, you can even pop them in a glass of water and they will root! Helen.xxx.

Hi Mikey just clear the land give it a watering with Jeyes Fluid and leave it for a spell.

Although it looks smart and is no doubt practicle for you what a waste of a front garden, more and more people flag or pave large areas we pay for it with flooding less habitats for wildlife.

Same stone we use for our patio last year nicer than normal slabs. And of course nice containers too.

I've not tried the big onions for a few years now but I do think they are one of the more satisfying large veg to grow. They always respond to heavy feeding, unlike some of the other types that are really dependant on the weather, too hot, too wet, too dry.

I was chatting with a work colleague yesterday about top soil. He's an old chap (the gardener at work) so knows a thing or two. He mentioned that it is possible to get it free if you can find a site where building/ excavation is going on. ..and are cheeky enough to ask..it may not be top grade...
