I may have made this moan before but I'm going to say it again. :heehee:

This is a bit controversial but I dislike it when people talk too fast.

It's becoming much more prevalent and I find that I switch off (literally and metaphorically) when it happens. I think that more young people are doing it but it's not restricted to them.

A lot of weather forecasters seem to have the habit. Although their speech is quite clear it seems as though they have been told to get through it as soon as possible. This seems to entail not even pausing between sentences.

I have done a minor study of this over the last 20 years. I belong to a number of organisations that have speakers and people presenting topics, a lot of whom have been hired by myself. The feedback that I have had over the years is not sufficient to be a proper case study but the results are interesting.

The completed feedback forms (written and electronic) are not of statistical relevance because of the lack of quantity (between 10 and 20 for each event) but show that the requests for the return of the speaker is over 70% in favour of those that speak slower.

The conclusion that I come to is that people find it harder to assimilate the information when presented at speed and, therefore, don't enjoy it quite as much.

An interesting, individual, statistic is from a chiropractor that I know. He gives talks to businesses and he has said to me that his referrals from his talks has almost doubled since I told him to slow his rate of speech down.

Fast talkers do start to sound like blah blah blah.... I agree.

That and those who say like, like all the time, like people like to hear that!

More a yippie than a moan. I moaned a couple of weeks ago on this thread about maybe having to go to court to give a flaming dog a character reference and I was less than pleased about it. Halleluiah, heard today that the case has been settled and court case cancelled. I wonder how much the injured cyclist managed to squeeze out of the insurance company!? Anyway thanks @shiney for your excellent advice. I was all primed to insist on getting a taxi to court which I doubt would have been exactly welcomed.

Do some people have a brass neck or what?

I was out in the garden today continuing to clear where a huge tree has come down. 2 women I've never seen before were walking along the road and stopped to chat to me about the fallen tree. 1 of the women said that I had a lot of Aconites and I agreed as the photos show. She then said that no doubt I'd be wanting to get rid of some (that would be a NO and why should I want to?) and that she'd like some as her ones seemed to have disappeared from her garden.

What a Bl.... cheek. I'd never met her before. It transpires she is local and lives about 1/2 a mile from me.

I was struck dumb and muttered something about it not being a good time to move them (lie!). She started to wander off and said she'd "see me" about the Aconites the next time she was passing. WELL I'm still slightly in shock. Having had time to think I'll SEE her the next time she's passing and say I'd be delighted to dig up some while she waits and will charge her £5 per 10 corms which is what the likes of Crocus charge. I already sell some of my double Snowdrops on the likes of Ebay and give the proceeds to a hedgehog sanctuary so she can buy some Aconites. bet she goes off the idea when I mention payment! mums aconite ans snowdrops 001.JPG mums aconite ans snowdrops 005.JPG

There were three different lecturers we would attend where the lecturers would speak very quickly. Yes, I know they had a lot they wanted to squeeze in, but, it was challenging enough for native English speakers to keep up and we had a lot of international students who were completely lost after just 5 minutes! As a mature student, I gained many study buddies from the international student domain, simply because ... they could understand me ... and the notes I took in those super speed lectures :roflol:

@silu - so pleased you didn't have to go through all those inconveniences to attend the court case  Fab to get your update.

@silu :phew: thank goodness you didn't have to go to court :dbgrtmb:.

As for the woman & the Aconites, if she does come back for some (which I doubt she will) I can't see any reason why you shouldn't ask her for a donation for the hedgehog sanctuary :dbgrtmb:
                Your garden look great :dbgrtmb:

Quite right too! We always charge strangers for anything from our garden and tell them it goes to our charity. We don't let them try and get out of it but I usually say words to the effect of "we sell our plants for the charity we support and they will cost you 'x' but there's no problem if you don't want them". One man used to come round to buy 50 Aquilegias the weekend before Open Day. He always tried to haggle on the price but I said, with a smile on my face, that he getting the pick of them so should really be paying more than the average price I charge on Open Day. :heehee:

Friends are welcome to cuttings of most things but if we dig up plants for them they tend to give us a token amount for the charity. Or we're doing a swap. If it's from something that we're thinning out or getting rid of then we don't take anything for it.

GC members are always welcome to cuttings, when they visit, for no charge. We sometimes refrain from pruning thing if someone has let us know in advance what they want. One year Kristen (GC member) had over 500 cuttings of Euonymous. They would only have been put in the compost when hedge cutting them.

Glad you approve of my thinking @shiney! Just because we have big gardens/loads of plants doesn't mean we are to treated as a free garden centre:rolleyespink:. I 100% agree with your thinking. I (when the weather improves....about June!) am in the process of digging up huge chunks of herbaceous to make room for things I like better. I have already given my local gardening club about 200 Day Lilies and similar amounts of various other things. The plants will be potted up by the members and sold for charity so quite happy to give these plants away.
People STILL like to buy Snowdrops "in the green" so will be doing my annual Ebay sale for the Hedgehogs over the next month or so. I must have given the sanctuary about £700 over the years, ok it's quite hard work/time consuming, digging up the bulbs, separating the flowering sized ones and then replanting the babies, plus washing and packing the bulbs but I am so lucky to have 1000s that I hardly notice where I've taken them from. My efforts are nothing on the scale of The Shinies Open Day extravaganza but happy to do a bit to help out a small charity which does a job that few others do to help our wildlife. It's chucking down snow here atm so no sign of The Aconite lady!

That's well done as every little bit helps. Have you thought of giving the money as Gift Aid. The charity will benefit by an extra 25% from the taxman. You can only do this if you already pay enough tax to cover that 25%. Otherwise it can be done in Mr silu's name. :blue thumb:
