Thank you for all your replies, I've found this to be most interesting.

I can't believe that I've never come across this before.....maybe it's because when it's time to change my tyres Kev gives me a choice of three makes of tyres which I can buy & I'm told under no circumstances can I buy cheaper tyres......I have to let him take control of the odd thing!! :heehee:

I suppose that we're lucky here. Just down the road we have a privately run service and repair shop and next door that is a privately run tyre and exhaust place.

They've been there since the 70's (tyre place, now second generation) and work on reputation only. They're alongside the station so they're used by the commuters and can't afford to do a bad job.

The tyre place always makes recommendations depending on the vehicle and driving style. He shows us the ratings for each tyre on the computer screen and explains the differences. He's also cheaper than any of the big boys. :blue thumb:

I once bought budget tyres. Another false economy. I had them changed just weeks later, while they still looked new, because they had no grip. Proper ditch finders.

I'm not sure make is quite so important since the new rating system came out, but typically, I go for Avon. They are good tyres but cheaper than michellin, Dunlop etc.

I also never accept the first quote. Say to the man, no that's too expensive, I'll leave it for a few weeks and often a better deal miraculously appears on his computer screen.

I could not have said that better myself, I agree totally.

Its not possible to see visually that part worn tyres are sound. So its better to be safe than sorry, and not buy them. Its not only our own lives we risk, but the lives of others.

As regards oil, dont get me started...try buying the correct one for a 180mph car that is over 50 years old! :snork:

That's great, luckily we have a similar situation a local garage within walking distance that has always serviced my cars - even new ones even though they are an independent. I trust them and if our cars need a new tyre they arrange and fit even though it's a garage not a tyre centre, they are around the same prices as any deal I can find on the interweb but much more convenient.

Comma Oils? We use them for the pre-war Bentleys and Rolls that we do.
When we were racing American V8 engines we swore by Valvoline. As you imply, oils for modern engines are not ideal in older engine designs and Valvoline did the job well for us.

180mph cars in the sixties were few and far between. Italian?

Neither...mine is all american. The Shelby is only 40% US, and weren't GT40's built in the UK with mostly British parts?

The original ones were. They were built at the Ford Slough works. When I was in the merchant navy one of my navy friends bought one of the first road versions. I remember that he had to go to the factory to be 'fitted' for it, with the pedals being built at the right length from the seat. This would have been sometime between September 1964 and June 1965.

He let me have a drive of it, on a track, and it frightened the life out of me. I think he told me that it had a Mustang engine in it. He offered, another time, for me to have another go but I decided not to.
