A few years back, someone gave me a chunk of Ornamental Fennel as she knew I was a keen foliage person.
I am now at the stage of being more selective as to what plants I give room to as getting far too old to create yet more beds! decided this plant is on the dig out list.
I have dug up the plant and I'm wondering can I eat the roots? Obviously it doesn't have a bulb like the Fennel you buy in the shops but the roots smell quite nice. If the roots are inedible I'll give the plant to the local gardening club as someone might like it.

When I grew herb fennel, I used the fernlike leaves and also harvested the seeds. Plus, the bees loved it! But I never used the root and, to the best of my knowledge, it isn't edible. (I'm prepared to be corrected on that if someone *had* used it :heehee: )
I'm sure members of your garden society would like to have some (if they haven't already) because it's a nice herb and great for attracting wildlife buzzies to the garden

Florence Fennel is the name of the bulb type that you buy in supermarkets to eat the fleshy bulb. Herb Fennel is the one you describe.

Thanks Tracy and M. I have someone from the local gardening club coming here tomorrow to pick up a barrow load of plants so probably best to give them the Fennel rather than try eating the root. I'd be a bit cross if I ended up at A&E after trying it:).
