I bought some of that stuff when Screwfix were selling it at better than half price (a year or so ago) for ground covering around perimeter of polytunnels. For planting through I prefer to use something more heavy duty (g/m2) and wider to reduce amount of pegging down, but OK for light use.

Still got some left for my latest tunnel addition, I'll remove the packaging when it warms up a bit

I asked at a local building site as I saw they where laying some down on the last bit of road to be built, they where just dumping gravel on the last bit when I walked past and asked if they had any left over/off cuts.

I was given a part roll approx. 12 foot wide so far I have unrolled 120ft to cover 3 beds, some still left on the roll too. The foreman told me once they where finished on the site they either threw stuff in the skip or paid to have it transported away.

The site was around 300yds from my front door so it was just up on the shoulder and a short walk home.

        It's always worth asking.

        Steve...:)

Nice one Steve, I'll keep my eyes peeled for any skips nearby.

It sounds as though you may not want the porous stuff that we grow plants through  Can't help you about my porous membrane because I bought it about 10, or more, years I bought it from a nursery and it was what they were using for themselves - I bought a whole roll (100m) and got it very cheap.

This was one of the old threads on the subject:-

= 75p/m2. It appears to be identical to the woven membrane sold in Wickes, garden centres, etc.

I would prefer at least 125gsm for boot trafficked over or closely perforated areas that'll be subjected to constant lifting and re-laying, but looking on ebay it appears to cost about 50% more. But I'm a bit spoilt as virtually all my Mypex type membrane is an extra heavy duty 145gsm.

I ordered the plastic for the new polytunnel I'm putting up this spring the other day, it arrived half an hour ago. It was rolled onto a stiff cardboard tube, further wrapped in cardboard then between that and the outer plastic wrap was a layer of thick weed membrane, enough for an 8x6 greenhouse..lol

                      That's 75p/m2.

                      Wilkos costs 40p/m2 in 1m x 25m rolls and 37.5p/m2 in 1.5 x 8m packs (plus 4.2% Topcashback on click and collect).

I bought a couple of these today, they feel a bit flimsier than the Apollo brand. Weighed them at home and they are around 75g per sq m. I think they should last three or four years provided they are not on a main pathway, they will probably do better covered in bark/chippings. Still a good bargain though :blue thumb:

I bought a 1.5 x 8m sheet from Wilkos last year when reduced to half price (£2.25) just to give it a trial this year. At 19p/m2 just a single use would be no more expensive than buying heavy duty stuff from ebay and reusing it for several years, and good for an inexpensive trial of growing through membrane before spending a lot of money on the better stuff.

Going to try growing something like 6 courgettes in 4m2 (12.5p/plant), 20 tomatoes in 4m2 (4p/plant) and 50 French beans & lettuces through the remaining 4m2 of that sheet (1.5p/plant) to see how it copes with holes at all sorts of spacings. Results before Wilkos reduce them, which was around 15th September last year.

The GC Bargains section http://gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/forums/freebies-offers-bargains.129/ + Google site search is a valuable resource, enabling checking when any reduced item has been posted, especially in the Wilko thread http://gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/threads/wilkos-half-price-sale.42517/page-24 . I also take lots of photos enabling viewing (in addition to sowing, planting, growing and cropping) of bargains which provides a valuable diary. And I remember when to check, like today (Friday) is normally the day to check the seed suppliers sites for their weekend deals, plus Easter in 2 weeks time is normally another time for special offers, free P&P, etc. (and Black Friday) which for some suppliers might be their only promotion all year.

Now that is a good idea, I think I'll try it with my giant onions - last year I must have weeded/hoed several times so if it saves time and helps keep in moisture it will be well worth it. I might have a go at using it for onion sets too and definitely for the giant pumpkin competition. Come to think of it I can probably use it for most crops down the allotment.

I kept a spreadsheet of time spent at the allotment last year, wonder if I can work out how much time I spent weeding. I'll be back ...
