I got my Bank Statement in yesterday, normally I give it a quick glance over but yesterday I had a good check over each item.
Fortunately I noticed my Electricity Direct Debit had increased by 50% this alteration had been made four months ago without my knowledge, I was not informed by the company in advance.
I also noticed in my last balance on my Electricity Statement I was £156 in credit.:yikes:.
I was on the blower right away to the company.

To cut a long story short-----The Direct Debit Amount is back to the original amount and a long winded apology was given, also some of my credit amount will be paid back into my Bank Account. I will be checking my Bank Statements more stringent in the future.:dbgrtmb:.

it's probably one of the drawbacks of the Direct Debit system that it's made more in favour of a Company providing a service than it is the person holding the Bank Account. So a company is able to alter the "agreed" figure without informing the customer of the change. BT did a similar thing to me when I was a customer of theirs in that they added "services" to my account for which I had not asked for and increasing the amount taken every month without informing me. I didn't notice for a month or two and then when I questioned it they informed me that I must have requested the additional services. I told them if I had I would have written to them and asked them to provide proof of my alleged request for adding services that I wasn't even using. In the end I got a written apology and a complete refund of the money taken out without agreement..........and then I changed my phone account to another company.:coffee::snork:

This is a nice little earner for these companies.
These "mistakes" multiplied by millions of accounts earns them millions of pounds a year.

You always need to keep one eye on your direct debits . I would think the majority of companies will inform you by mail of any change ,but this can be easily missed . Barclays inform me at least once a month of changes to my £0 payment on a credit card I held over 6 years ago ! @music if you don't like the service / price of your utility company it is very easy to change . Then again if they are OK on every other point , don't cut your nose off to spite your face

@music , I have just changed my current account of 40 years with RBoS to Santander. Now this used to be a daunting task transferring debits and orders etc . I just filled in a very simple online form and within 4 days I had a new account and debit/cash card ! On the seventh day my money transferred to Santander and the RBoS account closed. it was seamless !:blue thumb:
Obviously I am keeping a close eye on the payments over the next month to make sure everything is working OK .

Santander's 1 2 3 Account is still the best deal if you can fit their parameters. Although it's a Current Account it doubles up as the best Savings account as well. We get cashback from them each month. :blue thumb:

You can have some of mine if you want Jiffy .
Santander also pay 3% cashback on mobile and broadband and 1% cashback on my council tax.
So do the councils pay a 2% fee say to collect tax by direct debit ? Hope George does not find out about this !:snork:
