Mr Grinch's Garden

I said almost exactly the same thing this morning Mr. Grinch. Then the sun disappeared and the rain started.

 

Roses planted today. Ive made the decision today that over the next few years, i will gradually replace the roses i have in the garden to these David Austen roses. The older specimens i have here are starting to lose shape after years of pruning but i don't want to change them all over night. Two a year should be ok.

Move a large Hypericum today. Very tough and awkward job, but last few weeks that you can move these larger shrubs. Ive moved it to the center of the Boxed border to match up a little to the Viburnum. Then moved a Weigela to where the Hypericum was. The effect is much better i think. I also planted a few Box to finish off. There was a gap where the Hypericum was so im please with the overall effect.

Had another day moving today and yes, ive just bought another David Austen rose. Moved two Cornus, a couple of perennials and a rose. Then planted my new rose called "Boscobel". The roses are now evenly spread in the border. Also did a bit of mulching with some well rotten stable manure.

Planning for spring 2017 over the last few days. Ive noted areas that need Daffs and have marked them with a cane. Looked through the catalog and have chosen some varieties which i ill order for the autumn. I also want more crocus which will be planted in clumps.

Divided a Day Lilly today. Was getting too big. Never been divided since it was bought 7 years ago. Also moved it to a better spot. Had a quick rummage around the pool. Took out rotten leaves and just tidied. No bugs at all were present. Took out the stake for the Silver Birch and noted a low branch will need to be pruned out in the summer to make it look more pleasing.

Getting a bit tired of bare earth in the wet areas so will by some Persicaria to change this. The evergreen type. Excellent ground cover. Also will look into buying a Ligularia.

raked and cut the lawn on a high blade. Looks better already. Some seeding will be required this year as the lawns taken a hit in the wet of winter.

Over the past few years March has heralded the odd warm sunny day, a day where you can sit in the garden and drink tea or have lunch. This March so far i cant remember a day like that. This Easter weekend no different. Very wet over night, garden very wet. Sunny today but not warm by any stretch then wet wind and rain for the next three days. Hopefully April will herald something different.

I think the north west has had the best of the weather through March Mr Grinch. We've had three dry and mostly sunny weeks here on the island.

 

I would say we have been dry in March aswell but we have not had many sunny days and a lot of cloud. The easterly and North easterly winds prevail. Saying that it was glorious today but I've seen the weather coming.

 

There have been loses this winter. The Hibiscus doesnt look right. Cant see any buds at all. Coreopsis rotted, a couple of Geums rotted.

and ive noticed frog spawn in the pool.

 

Give the Hibiscus a good while yet. They are always very late to show leaf buds. Mine still looks dead at the moment but in another month or so it will start to move.

 

i know, i say the same every year and it always buds up although the shrub never does any good. It flowers but leaves are a yellow colour and drop off early. Trying to think of the conditions they like. Its in full sun, but can be dry on our clay. I feed and mulch every year but that does little. Could i water more or have it in shadier areas ?
