I've had a plant identified as a peony (yay me! This garden just keeps on giving!! :yay: )

    Now, two issues:
    1. It has emerged right next to my washing pole;
    2. The chooks love it

    One solution:
I gently scrapped away the soil and discovered, what looked like, 3 viable pieces of root. So, lifted them up and potted them into MPC (mixed with a bit of kiln dried sand to aid drainage.
There is fresh looking shoots on all three pieces.

Question: what to I do next to ensure that my transplants are successful?

    Thank you :)

Are you intending keeping them in pots? If so then keep them well watered and feed occasionally.
If you are going to plant them out, then they like a rich , well drained position in sun or light shade. Plant with the place where the leaves emerge at no more than an inch below soil level. That bud needs cold ripening to ensure flowering.

Thank you @Palustris just what I needed to know :blue thumb:

I intend to keep them in the little pots this year and plant them out next year.

UPDATE: I've kept them in small pots for almost a year now and, much to my delight they are budding
So, taking the above advice on board (plant to no deeper than an inch above the first bud) when would be the best time to plant these out? Or, should I continue to grow them in the pots for another year?

I would wait until Autumn to plant them out. Peonies dont like to be moved, so doing it then would give them a little more time to establish better.

One thing that I would like to add. Prepare the ground that you are planting them in carefully. When I planted mine, I used rhododendron soil, ie, slightly acidic.

Just to add my tuppence worth. I had always been told that Peonies don't move well. I had various ones, both Herbaceous and Tree which needed shifting. OK I took a lot of care over them but they all moved with absolutely no bother. I moved them in early Spring just as the buds were beginning to swell which I hoped would be the best time. Maybe I was just lucky.

A bit of a fallacy about them not liking moving. Planted properly and watered in , they move no trouble. My Uncle moved house 6 times in 10 years (job related) and took his collection with him, they always flowered.
Personally I would plant them now, as long as the soil is not frozen or waterlogged. They will have plenty of time to settle down before flowering.
Not that many of them are going to flower well this year, the weather has not really been cold enough to ripen the buds, not here at least.

I remember if you plant peony too deep, it will not flower
So should Google details for the correct plant position

And it's better to plant outside in autumn

Glad you asked M! :blue thumb: I've got one to plant too. Think I will leave mine in the pot for now, it's not much bigger than yours. Thanks for the advice above, sounds like it moves ok for some and not for others! :fingers crossed:

Thank you, I shall bow to your experience on this one and much appreciated it is too  No frozen ground and no waterlogging here either, so all I need is to put some organic matter into the planting hole and they should be good to go :hapydancsmil: Fortunately, I dug a new border this week and I'm going to pop them in there - which is roughly 6 feet forward from where I first found them, so it should be the right position too.

@Lynd - it's all very exciting because I have no idea which variety it is as I've never seen it flower. But as they are mostly on the pink spectrum it's more a question of which shade, I think. Which variety do you have?

Ah lovely! Its one of the best things I think, finding out what colour your plant will be! I just looked its Karl Rosenfield (not Rosenberg as I put somewhere else lol), a bright double red-pink  you'll have to put a pic up when it blooms, I'm excited for you!! :hapydancsmil:

Had to Google that one @Lynd - it's a little beauty for sure!

If mine should bloom (but I'm not optimistic for this year) I'll be so excited I'd be posting pictures on the BBC News! :heehee:

I moved some last fall. They are starting to emerge which I am worried about as we are back in the minus temps.

I guess I'll find out first hand if they bloom after moving, or not. :dunno:

No need to wait, here is a photo of my Karl Rosenfield (correct spelling!) IMG_3452.JPG

If the colour in the photo comes out the same as the colour on everybody elses screen, its lighter than it is in reality.
