Peony advice, please

One thing about peonies. The first year one of mine bloomed, it looked like this...

...exactly the same plant the following year...



Haven't a clue why it was white the first year, and pink the second!

 

Ooh that's a pretty ruffled one! Just a thought, they're not like hydrangeas where they change colour with soil ph? Just you mentioned acidic soil earlier.. I've never grown them before so I'm noob to these!

 

Perhaps one of the the others on here that is more knowledgeable could answer the soil question, or give a plausible reason?

Love your white/pink Peony @Sandy Ground, do you know what it's called? Is it an Herbaceous one? It looks a little like a double I grow called Duchesses de Nemours.
Can't wait to see mine flower again this year. They are a bit ott but quite fun to have a few blingey plants! The peach coloured Tree Peony was one of the ones I moved. The Yellow one is perhaps my all time favourite. It's an intersectional called Bartzella and is an amazing colour which almost glows in the dark, love it.

 

The yellow one I posted was a Barzella. Or at least, supposed to be..

The pink that turned white (or was it the other way round? ) is Paeonia lactiflora, "Sarah Bernhardt." Probably the most popular one over here.

I've heard they can live for a long time; well, this house is over 100 years old and I have no way of knowing who planted what or when - other than the old bottle I found last year which dates back to the 1920's, but no idea why they planted that

 

We find bottles like that too. Perhaps there was a bottle plant? Or is that milking the humour too much!
Did go out to count the Paeonies, but got side tracked. Reached 20 before that though!

 

One of my favourites I have the good old fashioned from the in laws type
My mother in law took a spade to hers, slicing a section off, I dug a hole and plonked it in
17 years later it's flowered every year(hers suffered the first)
It's beautiful, I love it and that's why it's my avatar

 

You're not over fond of them then?

 

These are wonderful plants but depending on the type can be very fussy, I cant remember the name of mine but I brought some tuberous roots from Morrisons and these took 5 years to flower and I had a spectacular display from the plant for 3 years, but then I had a stupid brain wave to move my established Peony to make way for Dahlias and it sat in its new home (which thinking back was maybe not the best place to plant it as it had semi shade) and it sulked for a couple of years with little or no flowers for 2 years, I then moved it back from where it first took root and its now in its second year back home and I am hoping for better things this year....these plants can very fussy but can also reward you with a wonderful display........check my profile picture

 

No need whatsoever to apologise. Judging by the fact that several that have answered have moved them, it is beginning to seem like an internet myth.

 

have to try to remember to get you all a picture.---there is a peony farm I pass, about 3 acres of the stuff. When picking time, the field is loaded, the women are out there cutting them, stacking them under this shelter.

 

Hi, I really don't have a clue to be honest. This was/is my first garden and I was so greatful of anything to fill it I didn't ask and I haven't since maybe I should my father in law should know, he's taught me a huge amount and is my gardening oracle ( apart from you guys obviously)
