True, longk, but unfortunately neither facts gives me confidence in the EU and, in fact, only serves to double my doubts
Belgium had been told, by EU security some years ago, that their security in Brussels wasn't good enough (reported by an ex-EU senior security officer on LBC Radio). Did either of them do anything about it? Nope! The EU could easily have put pressure on Belgium to improve security - and pay towards it.
Today began the Paper Campaign to persuade our household one way or t'other on the EU vote. It's got off to a dodgy start straight away, in my book. One letter; addressed to Mr "M" Clearly my vote isn't of any interest to that particular group then
I've not had a single piece through the door for the EURef, and only one for the ScotGov elections. I do most of my research online anyway (leaflets tend to be extremely sensationalist and often untrue, lol), but it's disconcerting to see the lack of effort!
We had our first and so far only one about a month or so ago. It was from the Labour party, and it told us all how we're all doomed if we vote out. It didn't give anything like a convincing argument as to how they reached that conclusion. In fact about 50% of the available print area was dedicated exclusively to slagging off the conservatives. This might have annoyed me at one time. I might have once wished that instead of criticising their rivals, they'd tell us what they believe is right. But not now, I grow too old and weary to hope that one day a politician might communicate clearly and objectively.
Mine (sorry Mr "M"'s letter forgot for a moment I don't exist ) wasn't from any of the mainstream political parties. In fact, he's/we've had no information come through the door from anywhere else! Which I find a bit worrying really. If this is one of the biggest decisions we will be making, why on earth aren't we being bombarded with information/arguments one way and another?
Worse than that, both the "in" and the "out" side are actively trying to prevent anyone who might understand any of it from making a statement, in case they are seen as biased. For example, president Obama, who can see Britain objectively from the outside, and who knows a think or two about global politicsand international relations has been asked to keep his face shut. That Carney lad who knows a bit about our financial situation has also been told to shut it. These are the kind of people I'd like to hear from. We hear from politicians who constantly lie, and from large corporate representives. I've not heard anything yet from the farmers, or the small businesses, both of which have organisations that represent them.
I doubt that the EU would contemplate doing the same for us, Shiney Besides, it looks to me that the open borders policy has contributed significantly to the ingress of extremists and now with the immigration crisis in Europe the Schengen agreement has bit the dust.
Used my EU in and out mailings to light the fire tonight. Thats all the eu has given me thats been of any use.
The was, finally, some detailed information released by the 2 sides over the Easter break. Pro Brexit campaigners claimed imported Easter eggs would be cheaper if we left the because of high EU levies on finished chocolate products. Remain campaigners hit back with claims that imported eggs wouldn't be as safe because they aren't subject to the EU's stringent Easter egg standards. I had to look at the date thinking it must be April already, but no, it was a true story.
Well, you're just 'the little lady indoors' Neither have we. Online is spouting just as much rubbish The politicians don't want to upset their voters by saying anything! Our MP is typical. He has turned down the offer of speaking at the seminar I'm trying to arrange on the business case for In/Out. Before the last election he was an 'Out' (in his campaign speeches) but now he's an 'In' because he's a junior minister and is 'toeing the line'. I don't know about the farmers but last week 200 FTSE businesses signed a paper promoting the 'Out' campaign. This week Marks and Spencer's have said that they think coming out won't harm their business because they already have their own negotiations completed in other countries.
I'm still voting out/leave, i think i've said this before I've had a few bits and bobs through the door about in/out but it didn't say much
If anyone is expecting any facts then (with all due respect) you are deluding yourselves. The result of leaving the EU is unknown and purely a matter of conjecture. Conjecture is what you're getting and it is up to you which conjecture you prefer. The facts as I see them are that most of the UK trade agreements will have to be renegotiated or resigned because as they stand our agreements are in place as an EU member. Huge tracts of UK legislation will need to be rewritten or simple repassed because that also relates to our membership of the EU. The terms of our exit are unknown as they will be negotiated in the two years following the decision to leave. There you go, factual flyer drafted and best of all both sides can use the same leaflet so a bulk deal will reduce the overall cost of printing it!
