Next door neighbours cats!!!!

Novice gardener of fruit and veg - I have spent to last few weeks assembling a couple of new raised beds, recycling compost from last year where poss and put it in the bottom of the beds and then topping off with new compost. They look fab. They must also look like huge litter trays as both cats from next door keep doing their business in them.

What can I do to deter them other than get a dog!!!

I do feel for you, a cat has chosen my front garden as its litter tray
I'm going to go the pepper route to see if that is affective.
For veg beds ... could netting of some kind help, do you think?

Hi GYO,

We have this problem on our front yard, with one particular cat who used to hide between the bins waiting for the birds ( we feed the birds out the front ). Now we use Wilkinsons own brand cat and dog repellent. It's a totally safe non harmfull mix of orange and mint in a spray gun type thing. It's only £1-75 a bottle and has lasted us around 6 wks so far. We use it roughly 2 or 3 times a week.

It also adds entertainment value as the said cat comes sauntering up looking all furtive and as though he owns the place and then when he gets to the edge of where we've sprayed he just goes like the clappers around it

 

We had the same problem, so I invested in these ultra sonic car scarers, they seem to work quite expensive £20 each, but its better than picking put cat muck

 

If you can bare the look of it on your new beds, I believe citrus peel is an effective deterrent.

 

We have a 3 cats and there's at least another 7 in our street alone, used regularly like @Anthony Rogers said the cat/dog deterent spray really does work, one household uses it in our street and cats don't go near their property unless it's on the block wall (I'm guessing it doesn't soak in) or they haven't sprayed that stuff in a while. I have no problem with people using it, before I had cats I used to go out and chase every one of them off my lawn as my garden used to be the streets litter tray so I know how you feel.. ps get your own cat!

£20 isn't much to protect my seedlings and to prevent me accidently touching/standing in muck. Yuck! Cheers

 

I love the cats. And they can poop and dig the borders around the garden all day - just not wear I am growing food. Cute kittie.

 

Oh @wiseowl he looks so cute and grumpy at the same time! Do you really dig it in? I've always been under the impression it's not the best, as pregnant women are advised not to change cat litter due to toxoplasmosis.. I might be bit of a worrier though!?

 

when i first built my borders the local cats thought it was a public loo, i invested in a sonic cat scarier and its kept them all away.. Best buy ever
