      Thanks all :)

To their credit, Santander have refunded the charges as a 'goodwill gesture' because I have never been charged before. So, at least the last two direct debits will be OK and assuming that the payroll balls-up is rectified in 9-days time, everything should be fine.

Regarding the rent - this is the only rise this year, so I have to swallow it to be honest. We have a really good landlord to be fair, and although I baulked at a near 10% increase, that increase is only just bringing us to the ballpark 'market value' for rents around here. The problem is where we are, as everything round here property wise is stupidly expensive.

As for Amazon, well their response is that they did not levy any further charges, but that they did process their part of the order in three separate bits, and charged my card as three separate transactions as all the items were dispatched at different times.

That was borne out by the deliveries, as I remember commenting to Mrs C how ridiculous it was that we got a box containing some bits, then later on the same day we got an A4 (roughly) size flat box which contained a small clear plastic packet of geranium seeds (2" x 2"); and then two days later we got another of the flat boxes with another single packet of geranium seeds.

The best of it is, I only ordered the seeds to get us over the £20 that they require you to spend to get the delivery - presumably the reason that they have this requirement is to make sure that the postage costs are not costing them more than their profit for the transaction, which begs the question how on earth did they make a profit by sending tiny seed packets separately in much larger boxes?

I can see I am going to get absolutely nowhere with Amazon on this one, so I will let it go - but, I will be watching them like a hawk from now on.

        Hi again FC

I have actually complained to Amazon on Feedback regarding the ridiculously large sizing of some packaging and that it is a total waste of environmental resources. :yikes:

Well done Santander (Totto here) ... we have used them for donkey's years with absolutely no problems! We transfer our UK money from the London office at no cost and the staff at our small bank here always greet us with a handshake .. just like in the UK!!!
        :heehee:

PS If you checked the addresses from where your deliveries originated, you may find they came from all parts. Mine have been from Wales, Scotland Germany, Holland ... etc ...

I read Amazon is opening a massive warehouse soon in the UK with 1000 job opportunities. :dbgrtmb:

Talking about rudeness, I was in a café today and two women came in and started to eat a bag of crisps. The waitress told them they were only allowed to eat food bought on the premises, but they started to argue, saying they were going to buy a meal anyway.
But that was the shop's rule and it was written on a notice at the counter.
Anyway, the argument went on and they said they'd leave. The waitress told them not to come in again if they were going to bring food bought somewhere else with them, and one of them said "Don't worry luv, I won't come here again, and if I do I'll push your face into that frying pan !!!"

Sorry if I'm writing about any of you but one of my pet hates is the unsocial use of mobile phones, ipads etc.

We were in an Indian restaurant on Sunday evening and eight tables, including ours, were occupied.

One was a table of eight that included 3 young children. The children were playing on ipads and I suppose that's not too bad if it keeps them quiet (a clip round the ear was sufficient to keep us quiet back in the first half of the last century :heehee:).

Another table had four adults, all of them using their smart phones and no conversation the whole time.

Another table of four, all adults, with three talking and the fourth using a smart phone.

A table of two men in their early 20's, right opposite us, talking all the time whilst one of them was on his smart phone all the time. The one not on the phone was shovelling as much food on his fork as possible and trying to stick it all in his mouth in one go. This wasn't successful and a lot was falling out of his mouth and back onto the plate (the waiter was rolling his eyes :rolleyespink: and shaking his head). He was talking at the same time and more food fell out of his mouth. Fortunately we didn't have to witness this horrible sight for long as he finished his two curries and rice in about four minutes!

One other table of four was having their conversation interrupted by one or other of them receiving and replying to messages throughout the meal.

The rest of us were electronic free.

When in town the other day I did see a woman walk into a lamppost whilst texting :lunapic 130165696578242 5:
and I don't get out of the way when someone is walking towards me engrossed in their phone. Which results in a few collisions and the occasional dropped phone. :snork: I've never had the courage to accidentally step on the phone

I haven't got a smart phone or ipad, and I don't want them.
I am proud of how old fashioned I am
I have got a very cheap and simple mobile, which I keep in the car incase it breaks down ... and it is kept switched OFF until needed. I don't want to be pestered wherever I go ...

The other day a girl walked right into Beryl's wheelchair as we were going through a local town :gaah:
She did say 'sorry' ... but then carried on walking while fiddling with her phone :rolleyespink:

I'm glad I'm old fashioned and that's how I intend to remain :blue thumb:

:gaah: Mobile phones at dinner tables :gaah: it drives me bonkers, it makes me so cross I could scream! I love the fact that you refuse to move for someone texting @shiney keep it up & I think you should step on a phone given the chance! I do use my smart phone & I do think they are a very good tool BUT not at the dinner table, NOT during a conversation with others & certainly NOT whilst driving....don't even let me start on that! :gaah:

@Michael Hewett, what an awful situation you witnessed in the cafe, isn't it a shame that so many people seem to have lost respect & manners for other people? :dunno:

I would like to say it is only the youth of today who have no manners or respect but I'm not sure on that 1 at all.
When I and my brothers were young in the 50s we were taught to give up our seats on the bus, tube etc to elderly/infirm/ even female passengers. We were taught to hold doors for our elders and not barge. Please and thank you were the norm and "People who ask don't get". The opposite appears true today, "He who shouts the loudest.......
From memory there seemed to be a definite change in people's attitdude at the beginning of the sixties so much so that my parents got annoyed with people not thanking us for giving up seats, holding door etc that they told us not to go out of our way to be polite. I still try to be polite when interacting with other people and when I'm driving but more often than not my politeness is taken as a weakness so I then respond accordingly and join the f everybody else brigade!

Smart phones are great, I'm only just getting into them in my 30s after resisting for a good chunk of time.. dyslexia makes you even more reluctant to try new tech because it makes the learning of it that bit harder! :thud: However, I'm finding having a couple of wee games to play on the train nice, being able to text my international friends at no cost is wonderful, and the map app' is very useful in towns and cities I've never been to!

BUT, I do agree that you have to know when to use it. Out at the dinner table, or in a restaurant, or hanging out with family = verboten, unless by agreement!
