Plans for 2016

I always like to have a garden project on the go and aim for one big (ish) project each year. I have a long term plan, but due to costs have to do it a bit at a time.

Next up is a raised bed for a troublesome area along the length of my garage wall, its east facing so doesn't get a whole lot of rain due to prevailing wind. The top soils also very shallow, and the subsoil is builders garbage!

What are your plans for 2016?

 

I only moved into my house at the tail end of last summer, so now spring is crashing on in I need to starting moving on the plans I made over the winter!

Plans I've managed to complete:

• Plant a Forsythia
• Plant fruit bushes
• Plant some seeds for patio pots and hanging baskets

Plans I'm halfway through:

• Digging a new flower bed in the front garden
• Clearing gravel and weed cloth from the existing front garden bed

Plans still to start:

• Plant poppies and cerinthe and crocosmia in the front garden
• New fencing in the back garden, including splitting it in two for leisure/kitchen garden
• Build raised beds in the kitchen garden
• Install chicken coop in the kitchen garden
• Plant various shrubs in the leisure garden (including roses, buddleia and cotoneaster)

...I have no idea if I'll be able to complete the back garden projects this year or not (it is a lot!!), but I'm just going to keep going and see how much I can do!

 

Fine tuning my slope garden down in the valley. Adding more blue berry bushes, the ones I put in two years ago are doing wonderful. The birds will be thrilled. Adding some low growing roses. Adding some red grasses for texture contrast. And that should be it. Other areas, could be tinning out some daffs.

 

In my case, I'm waiting for just under 200 plants to be delivered. They must be in the ground by the 24th of this month, come what may. Then, after Ascension Weekend, I'll be digging up the front garden to lay water and sewage pipes.

Wow, you are going to be busy!

 

200!!! Thats going to keep you busy, its the laying them out bit that always seems to take forever. I sometime struggle to visualise how it will look and end up moving them after I have planted anyway. Plus I have a bit of OCD, so the tape measure comes out too.

 

Progress on the raised bed is slow, not helped by me ordering the wrong amount of wood so had to wait for more to arrive.

The main structure has been built, posts are in. Tomorrow I plan to fix a horizontal to support the garage for me to fix the black plastic to, this is to prevent damp on garage wall.

I have 2 other projects in mind, to build a round table and build a pergola, but can't afford both at the moment.

I want to learn more about growing plants! That's all really, I am a novice and am probably going to get stuff wrong but that's half the fun!
