@silu I agree that we were taught to be polite and a lot of youngsters, and adults, today aren't but I must also defend some youngsters :blue thumb:. We are frequently offered seats on the Tube by youngsters that if you saw them in the street you would probably cross the road!

@Super Lucyjin I also agree that smart phones certainly have their place :) - but only in the right place.

I'm not quite sure about texting international friends being free. Surely you have paid a monthly rental for the calls and texts service (or the connection fee)

@shiney : By "free" I mean I have several "app" means of texting them (WhatsApp, Google Hangouts, Twitter group messages, Slack, etc) that fall inside either the included data parameters of my contract, or alternatively via WiFi usage if I'm at home/somewhere else with available WiFi.
It's not literally free, but for back and forth conversations with multiple different people, it beats the hell out of 25p a text! :snork:

The younger generations are very dependent on their smart phones and as the future is theirs and technology evolves ever faster, we need them to keep on top of things.
BUT, while they are growing up, it is their parents who have a duty to instil manners and explain social etiquette to them (and reinforce it/lead by example).

Perhaps I didn't express myself very clearly, not for the 1st time:), I was meaning that it is often older people who can be extremely rude and disrespectful while I agree @shiney a young person smothered in tattoos as an example can be very polite and thoughtful. I'm off for a short break to Rome with my daughter next week and flying with the dreaded Ryanair! If getting on board is anything like the last flight I took with Ryanair I'll need to be kitted out like an American footballer. I was all but mown down in the rush and the vast majority of the rabble were a good 5 years older than me and I'm an OAP (just:)).

Yes, @silu I agree that we pensioners can be very rude as well. Particularly when having to queue up (or nor, as the case may be :heehee:) as we expect people to defer to the grey hair and wrinkles! :old: :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

A few days ago I stopped at a zebra crossing for two girls to cross.
As they did, they raised their hands and said 'Thank you'. I rarely see an older person do that.

Good to know - my brussels seedlings are some of the ones I want to move to the unheated greenhouse next week. Thank you for the heads up!
