Well thanks for all the discussion! :rolleyespink::redface: I think I should take some pictures though it's raining at the moment - there are a couple small trees in place already on the north facing side of the garden and another small one on the west side, and a large vine with a woody trunk on the south facing wall. I don't think I can wait a year.......I need to get some flowers in! I'll probably plant mainly annuals both in the beds and in containers. If there are perennials lurking under the surface I guess I'll deal with that when the time comes. I have a few vegetables and herbs that are now sprouting indoors but I'm afraid to plant anything outdoors just YET - we had hail here just an hour ago!
The RHS website looks to be very informative but my iPad doesn't seem to like it - it freezes up constantly. I'll give it a try on a PC.

Oh yes, please! Everyone on here loves pictures :wub2:
Oh the "hail" front, someone said today that the weather is forecast to turn a bit "arctic" next week :rolleyespink: so I think you are wise to hang fire for a little bit longer

Ok took some pictures today. In the meantime I've been drooling over the Crocus website :) I've noticed they have some border collections sold as a package, even some plans from RHS Wisley. Is it cheating to go that route??

I know I originally said I wanted a warm colour scheme, I am now going the opposite direction in pinks, purples and blues.... Here it is, as is and ready for some TLC!

This is the south facing wall. Never mind the blue pot - it was only set there to get it out of the way. I don't know what the vine is or if I need to prune it or something? It looks pretty massive. The green plants you can see here are mostly Columbine, I believe. I'm ok with pulling most of that out as it seems to be spreading too much.

This is the corner of the south and west facing wall. I don't really like the grassy plant (can't remember the name) in a small garden, they tend to get too large.

Not if you can afford it.

But noticing you are in Surrey have you been to Wisley and seen the model gardens there? They are a great inspiration.

Nope, not grumpy, @Anthony Rogers wanted me to disagree with him. So in fairness I had to do a complete job of it. Would have not bothered except he requested it.

It looks like you have a ornamental grass there, it needs to be cut down to about 6 inches from the ground.

I actually have no idea what type of soil I have....I plan to add fresh compost to the beds as well as fertiliser before I plant. The south wall looks to be full sun, though we haven't had much sunshine since moving so not 100% positive!

I would ditch the wooden border edging and extend the border out towards the lawn.

The vine might be an aged Honeysuckle most of which can be pruned back hard.

Take a look through my Salvia album on Flickr - you might find something you like and the south facing border with that wall would be ideal...............

Take a look through them and ask anything about them on this thread.
