So I was digging some holes in the garden. Got down roughly 22 inches in one area, no issues. Started digging about 5 foot away from the first area and only got 12 inches down before water started pouring into the hole from a side wall of the hole, it just kept coming, so I bailed it out as best I could and "plugged up" where it was coming from with a handful of the clay soil I had dug out and left it!

I'm really confused as to what it could be. Is it the water table? I don't understand how I can dig down dry in one area nearby with no water, then not even get half that depth, my (admittedly limited) understanding was the water table was all one level, is that not right?

I would doubt that it is the water table as such.

It could be that you found a cavity in the clay soil which was holding water or, worse, you've found a pipe [but at only 12 inches in digging depth I would doubt that]. It might pay you not to ignore it and hope it will go away but rather do a cautious investigation to find out the answer.:coffee::snorky:

I would have to investigate it :snork:, underground spring  I am sure I could make a lovely feature from it :).

Ooh I'm really torn what to do! I don't really want water to be there so I'm worried about reaching a point of no return and ending up with a swimming pool situation over there, but if it will drain and be dry then that would be ideal. If it's unlikely to be the water table in theory it should be possible to drain? Might get my armbands on and dive back in!

It could be a spring, there could be a land drain near by or which i did come across once a old water pipe that has been cut off at both ends and water runing down that pipe

Sound like a busted water pipe to me.
I had a leak fixed last year, it had been running for months, but the water never surfaced, the pipe was also only about 14ins down.

Where exactly are you digging, is it near buildings? Or out in the countryside

I wouldn't rule it out, Pete, but "officially" the minimum depth a water pipe can be laid is 30 inches and the maximum depth 53 inches.:dunno::coffee::snork:

After WW2 they were bunging up the houses pretty quick, so guess mine got buried a lot shallower than it should have been, this was on my property and not a street main which are a lot deeper as I can confirm, as the gas main replacement blokes dug a few of them up recently, and they started leaking as well.

Could you have unbunged a field drain? there's one on my land. It runs under a road, into my land, then down a ditch. I knew it was supposed to be there when I took over the land because my dad (who I bought it off) told me, but apart from an inexplicably sloppy area, there was no sign. So I dug where it was supposed to be. When I find it, it literally gushed up and splatted me with muddy water. The sloppy patch dried out to the same moisture level as everywhere else within a couple ofweeks.
