Strange naming of plants

I might have got this round my neck, it does happen but am I right in thinking supermarkets and DIY outlets are selling plants with made-up variety names ??

As I think I mentioned in another thread I noticed Lidl selling fuchsias with names like (from recollection) Melodee, Jaynie, Greeta or similar. I've never heard of these varieties nor can I find them online.

I was in B&Q today and they had the same sort of thing going on, for instance plug sets of Begonia (the Wax sort) Rainforest. Never heard of these either, and cannot find anything really online apart from the odd mention. Nothing from the usually online sellers. I'm assuming these are actually semperflorens 'organdy' or similar - they look exactly like them.

I find this daft and confusing.

Or have I missed something and making a bit of an erse of myself ...

It's an old seedsman trick, if a variety isn't selling, rename it as "improved" or something.

So if you'm not selling enough of Scruttock's Old Dirigible, change it to Scruttock's New Improved Zeppelin

 

The thing with Fuchsias ( sorry, can't speak for Begonias etc ) is that new varieties don't have to be registered with the AFS ( American Fuchsia Society ), it's totally voluntary. So if someone grows a brand new Fuchsia and then approaches the likes of Lidl to sell it for them then it's perfectly legal. That also means that it won't go through any rigorous testing etc unless Lidl want to spend the money doing it.
Also I doubt very much if you'd ever find it listed on any websites or in any books etc.

Also, it could just be a mis-naming of an established name.

EG.... You mentioned " Greeta " there is actually a single pink Fuchsia called " Greta ".
