Craving red cabbage

    For the last few weeks, I've constantly craved red cabbage. I've bought myselfa few in that time. I just graze it.

    I believe cravings are driven by a need for one or more specific nutrients, and that the body instinctively knows where to find what it needs. So this begs the question, what is special about specifically red cabbage, and what must I be lacking to crave it so much?

    It's a long shot I know, but any ideas? :)

    Well, I think we can rule out that you're pregnant Clueless. :biggrin:

    Only guessing but could it be a provider of iron?

      But if it was iron, I'd probably crave red meat or liver. That's happened before :)

      I think you meant " I think we can rule out that you are pregnant " . Unless you know something about Clueless that we don't. :roflol:

        I reckon that you've just rediscovered the joy of cabbage. We go through one red and one white cabbage a week and none of it is cooked.
        Slice some red and white cabbage, add some sliced onion and top off with salad cress for a lovely salad. Serve with minted yoghurt. Great with wraps, stuffed pitta breads, steak sarnies etc.

            Not necessarily. If it was calcium, just think of the list you could choose from for that. I think it's a case of how you want to take it at the time.

            I don't really like fish but there are times when I go for weeks craving and eating it. So again there must be something in fish I've needed.

            Anthony, I spotted and corrected that before I read your post. :) It's late and I'm tired. :doh:

              I was never really a cabbage eater, but then I tried some pickled red cabbage and I can't get enough of it. :snork:

                We love Red cabbage too, and been eating it off the allotment since December. Just picked the last couple of heads and those that were picked earlier are running to flower, those are delicious raw or lightly steamed like sprouting broccoli.

                  Earlier this year I found large jars (800g?) of pickled Red Cabbage reduced to only 29p each in an MK B&M, they only had 6 left and I couldn't find them at any other store, all gone and sorely missed.

                    Did some research. Red cabbage contains chemicals that function as anti inflammatories. They are also loaded with vitamin c, which is essential for, among other things, synthesis of collagen, which in turn is needed for repair of connective tissues like tendons and ligaments. Guess who's overworked and potentially damaged ones knees. Anti-inflammatory plus collagen synthesizing vitamins. Hmmm. Red cabbage :)

                    Guess what I craved for dinner. A bowl of red cabbage and beetroot.

                      That's interesting, I will keep that in mind for future reference. I can't take most modern medicines so quite often seek out alternatives and this is one to add to my mental list. :)

                        I also fancy red cabbage, jut recently. I slice it quite thick and season it with salt vinegar and olive oil.

                          Try it with poached or soft boiled eggs. I did. It's delicious.
