Appears that if the EU bans Glyphosate, the ban will only affect us gardeners, but farmers, landowners, etc. can carry on using it http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...ime-of-weeding-as-meps-demand-weedkiller-ban/ Sounds identical to the EU's latest legislation to protect sea Bass stocks, ban sea anglers from keeping any fish whilst letting trawlers carry on catching thousands of tonnes of Bass.
" lets blow a billion on roads and a billion on houses (12000 houses?). But both these activities will require materials and equipment which will need importing." Exactly what would we need to import ? We produce everything here apart from immigrant labour and I am sure the thousands of unemployed British Brickies and Builders would be overjoyed to work again
Housebuilding wise we don't produce enough materials in the UK - according to a Radio 4 program last year we have a total deficit of building materials to something like three or four billion. Obviously not all of that figure relates to domestic construction. Roads? Well bitumen is pretty vital! That comes from crude oil from Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. Beyond JCB's we don't produce any heavy plant either.
Insane amounts of crude oil arrives on a regular basis just a mile or so from me. Must of it arrives from Saudi. Some of it is simply torched, and goes up in smoke at the flare stack. Some of it is accidentally turned into worthless sludge, and the rest of itgets turned into tiny plastic beads which go straight back to the port, to be shipped to China, to be made into plastic crap, to be shipped back here to be sold as pre-broken toys, plant pots, and carrier bags.
That's not like you Weetam, that's very pro EU. The implication being that Britain leaving the EU is doomed to sink.
Yes, an unfortunate name to pick. They should have called it Britannia. That's the trouble with youngsters today , they don't know their Britannics from their Britannias. The last 'Britannic' built was, supposedly, sunk by a German mine in WWI Whereas there are two ships called 'Britannia' still doing well. The retired Royal Yacht is supporting the tourist industry in Edinburgh and the newest one is the flagship of the P&O Line. So, the cartoonist could be right and may be trying to imply that we had better leave the EU before Germany sinks us. I think he's just ignorant of the facts and intended to imply that it was leaving because the EU would sink.
I kind of agree with you disagreeing @clueless1 , but the way I see it, at the moment is, a strong Britain is relying upon imported labour in most or the "get you hands dirty" type jobs. We need a broad spectrum of school leavers, not just the University bunch, as much as they are appreciated, when studying worthwhile courses, there are an awful lot just going to uni because they are told, by the education system, that is the right thing to do. Having said that, the so called, modern apprenticeship set up seems to be mostly baloney as well. So I can see why kids dont know which way to turn. A bit of an idea what "work" actually means, when leaving school would be a good start.
Very true - anyone with a good memory can get a degree. The real 'skill' comes in applying the nollige you have to real life situations. Experience is more important than paper qualifications.
I think that's similar to people that get high IQ levels in IQ tests only showing that they're good at doing IQ tests! Their, so called, genius may not translate into anything that is of use to anyone.
I think the whole 'system' is wrong. A big issue is the concept of the 'dead end job'. Kids are taught that they really don't want a dead end job. But a job is a job. It's a means of earning a living by doing something useful.
I've been in a "dead end job"for 46yrs, I'll never be rich, but up to now I've never been poor. I'm still learning, but doing the same basic job I started at 15 as an apprentice. And its stopped being fun anymore.
