Hi. I have decided to grow some sweet peas to put out on to my balcony, I don't have a garden unfortunately. I started them off inside on a windowsill and they have grown quite a bit. I have been putting them outside for a few hours each day for just over a week now and think they are ready to be planted out but it has still been quite cold here in Central London. I'm worried they won't survive if I do it now but also think they are to big for the pots they're in. What should I do, any help greatly appreciated.

Can you hang on till the weekend? By then these arctic conditions are forecast to end and we should be back to normal for the time of year. I'm hoping to start planting stuff out then too.

My sweet peas have been outside for about 3 weeks now (but, not planted up yet). They were in a sunny position, but I moved them to a more sheltered spot a couple of days ago when this arctic news came in. They have been outside 24/7 and are still thriving. I will be putting them in the ground at the weekend.

Don't think I would have had the confidence to do that last year, but the local gardening club had a sweet pea "expert" give a talk back in January and I've followed much of his advice with these seeds. My best year yet for sweet peas (so far :fingers crossed: )

The weekend is only 3 days away :dbgrtmb:

Thank you both. I can wait till the weekend I was just worried they were getting far too big for the pots. Will keep putting them out during the day till I can transfer them to a largish planter. Hope they'll be ok, do they need to be planted any particular way ie one plant spaced how far between the next and how much depth will they need? Thanks again :)

With these freezing nights I'm not even moving plants from my heated greenhouse to unheated polytunnels, nor sowing/planting anything in open ground, waiting until Sunday 1st May, only 4 days to wait despite everything getting a bit crammy.

I said Sunday 1st above, because Saturday & Sunday mornings here will still be around freezing and it wont be until Monday that they suddenly increase by about 5 deg C.

So my Sweet Peas will get planted out on Sunday. I always push some twigs in the ground next to them to help them start scrambling up bamboo canes, and help raise them above slug level.

P.S. Just looked out the window and it's snowing again.

This weather is very strange! Will plant them out on Sunday, I bought some trellis for them to climb but will go and get some twigs too. Thanks again.

@Rhiannon , this guide below may give you a few pointers on growing SweetPeas.
I always plant mine out beginning of April, they are quite hardy and can take a little frost. But follow advice above and plant out May Day . It is going to be a very busy day in the gardening world , everyone is behind with the planting due to the cold .
