Herbs From Seed

Anyone else started off some herb seeds for this year? I sat and sowed my Basil, Parsley, Dill and Coriander today I've sowed the same two Basil as last year 'Genovese' & 'Dark Opal' but I also found a packet of 'Bolloso Napoletano' and a packet of one called 'Lemonade' I purchased from T&M the other month

I haven't sown any yet but am on the look out for some Chives seed.

I've just bought two trough like things ( they're like wrought Iron wall baskets/window boxes but stand on the floor ) and am gradually making these into a small herb garden.

So far have got..... Rosemary, Bay, two different Thymes and a Spearmint ( submerged in a large pot to control it ! ).

Will try and take some photos tomorrow

Sounds good @Anthony Rogers Did you want any Chive seeds? I've got seeds coming out of my ears and I know I have multiple packs of Chive seeds I will never use which I picked up at Poundstretchers end of year sell off and I also have some Garlic Chive seeds somewhere as well.

I'll have to take some photo's of some of my plants as well,

Garlic chives are very attractive plants which flower freely; I grow them as ornamentals in my Mediterranean style garden, along with other herbs too.

 

First time I've grown herbs, started them off end of Feb on my kitchen windowsill.. parsley, coriander, basil and chives, no varieties sorry.
Don't know what I done wrong with the chives. Any spacing tips as well please? Parsley seems ok but my coriander is tangled and floppy

 

The chives look fine Lyn. I would put them outside in the daytime at least; they are tough and fully hardy. Corriander is a short lived annual and ready to cut and use now......you need to to sow continually to have steady supply. Parsley can be hardened off now and planted out soon. Basil is very tender and for me only does well on a window ledge except in the hottest part of summer when it can go outside in a pot.

 

sometimes, when I think of the herb bushes that my mother used to have in the garden, I wondered whether our country house had been chosen just because it was the ideal combination of sun, soil and exposure for the purpose of growing glorious herbs and vegetables.

 

Thanks for that @Redwing I thought parsley and coriander were cut and come again, have been pulling little bits off and having a nibble. Will I need to sow parsley continually too? Much prefer growing and eating that.
I did start putting things outside but it's gone wintry here the last few days, basil will suffer badly, will put the chives out though

 

Parsley is biennial so you can keep cutting and eating the leaves, then next summer it will seed.

Coriander tends to be difficult and likes to go straight to seed...

 

I'm not fussed on the mess it looks.. need to get a curry and naan on the go and be done with it.
