Good grief - that's going to make a wad. I don't like using plastic because the exchange rate charged is a much higher percentage than when changing dollars for pounds in cash... I have a U.S. dollar card but there is no product available (yet) here for other currencies...

Can you get travel cash cards you just put your money on it and it is protected by a PIN number . You can then draw cash on it at an ATM or bank etc. It's not a good idea to carry wads of cash.

Good idea to start checking into these other currency options - I have this total fear of being without money in a place where I am totally on my own.. :yikes: Turns out that there's only 10 of those bills to change to smaller denominations and since I don't need the money until next year, I have plenty of time to order them in. :phew:

Thanks for the heads up about this. I really wouldn't know what to wear to coordinate with the drug dealer money... :heehee:

@shiney - Thanks for that but I never save seeds. All the seeds I used were new so I don't get what happened. Unless maybe a machine put the wrong seeds in the wrong packages. But I did plant sweet peppers with hot peppers and all the peppers were hot.

@CanadianLori - Thanks. Our last freeze was late this year and it was only 5C Tuesday morning but when I plant them I will put them in 2 different locations. Unless the seeds got mixed up then something happened that made all the sweet peppers hot.

Sorry about the late reply but I had wi-fi issues and a tornado took out some power poles and stuff a few miles from here. So our service may be down a few more days while they fix all the equipment.
      Awesome thread, btw.

I moved 6 or 7 of the early plants out to the greenhouse a couple of weeks ago - they dont seem to have noticed that is been frosty outside (they are on the hot bench on a heat mat!)
-- also the whitefly dont seem to mind the cold either... grrr...

Meanwhile the second batch are almost up to the artificial sun so need to be moved out ASAP - maybe this weekend if the temperature holds:

Looking great! I found a very small pot with a pepper in it and it was in one of the blowaways - unheated. To my surprise it seems just fine - gave it a bigger pot. Maybe it is only when they are blossoming that the heat counts

I still haven't changed my notes - none of the local banks seem to have small denominations. You got to watch it with our plastic money. If you fold it, put it in your jean pocket, then walk around a bit, it is sneaky and will work it's way out...and then you're out money

Sorry to disappoint, but yes, I think it is too late. You may get a few chillies, but not a huge number. All of my plants (sown mid Feb) are either in flower, or coming into flower. By buying plants, you are much more likely to have good results, and get hooked enough to sow seeds good and early, next year...

I think so Paul . latest I plant my Chilli seeds is early February. Best to buy plants from the GC and grow them on.

I grow a number of different chilli varieties without a greenhouse, so have them on windowsills and under dormer Windows until it is warm enough to put them outside.

I have baby chillies forming on nearly all the varieties, apart from patio sizzle. Now that it's time to start feeding, I would like to have a little space back indoors.

As a reminder to me (and for new growers) what would you recommend as a minimum temperature for them to tolerate outside, and a good pot size for a 2 foot tall plant?

I think that a minimum overnight temperature of 16C is needed for them not to be slowed down. 10C absolute minimum - but I would expect, at that temperature, that the flowers may halt not produce any more fruit until it warms up,

Some varieties will take the lower temperature but most prefer to be above 16C. Do you have a blowaway you can put them into? This may help. Mine have been surviving in the greenhouse but those kept in the propagator are way ahead of the others.

With regard to pot size. I'd still continue to use the old system of waiting until you can see the roots peeking out of the bottom before repotting. I would expect to have a 2ft high plant in at least a 2 litre pot, but it again depends on variety. Some of my best, and prolific, plants don't get more than 12" high and they will be put into 1 litre pots.

Warmth, water and feed are the important things.

Theres some interesting stuff in my local GC this year (its a wyevale) - lots of choice for chillis - Lemon drop on sale last time I was there, first time Ive seen those outside a specialist grower + I picked up a grafted Trinidad scorpion to grow next to my "from seed" ones for comparison.

Time will tell if they actually turn out to be what they say, naturally...

Thank you @shiney! A perfect summary of what is required.

I don't have a blow-away. On my exposed site, it would only give a few nights protection before living up to its name!

I will do the tried, tested and successful method of out in the morning (after dog-walk), in at night. But the odd flower-halt wouldn't go amiss. We tend to average 50-100 chillies per plant, we have 40 plants, and use 1-3 chillies per week. My maths isn't good, but....:hate-shocked:

Seems a bit of overkill at about 30 years worth!! :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

I get through about 30 a week and Mrs Shiney gets through less than that. :rolleyespink:
