Yes, it's a bit of a risk. But I put mine out into a raised bed yesterday. I'll be totally stuffed if there's another hard frost, though I'm ready with a double layered fleece blanket if there's a frost warning.

Reckon it would do any harm to take off the frost damaged leaves? Growing points seem ok. DSCI0302.JPG

When did that happen? It was mild here last night.

@Zigs If they are gonners, I could bring some of my spare plants as replacements when I'm on my trip to Dorset next week.

So why do we only plant as deep as the first set of true leafs? why not deeper?

It looked like you might be tomatoless this year from that pic, been so many cold nights here that I've had to buy an extra Propane cylinder.

You can plant as deep as you want, tomatoes form roots all the way up the buried stem, so the deeper the better. Just need to nip off any leafs that will be buried, as they will rot.

I don't do that, I remove their seed leaves and then keep on re-planting ever deeper, removing further lower true leafs as necessary. This will produce a bigger rootball, healthier/stronger plants, and flower trusses closer to soil level.

That's exactly what I thought but when you read things they tend to say 'up to' and not just as deep as you like.
Secretly I was going to go deep anyway lol

I'm resisting being tempted by the hot weather into planting tomatoes in my polytunnels as there's a few chilly nights forecast for next weekend, so will just keep on potting them up. I haven't fogotten the June morning when it dropped several degrees below freezing at my plot.

Nice. Just think - if you're that good to your daughter's plants, you're going to make a fantastic grandfather..:heehee:

Got to get back to work here... later I'll try to take a pic of my leggy tomatoes :)
