    Hello,

I'm a Scot enjoying living in France but feeling overwhelmed by my new big garden and as my French is only conversational I'm after a group of people who can offer tips and hints to a garden newbie in her native language. [emoji4]

Welcome. We don't live in France, but have two lots of friends there who we visit regularly. We have found the quality of French gardening, especially vegetables and the plant nurseries to be excellent. We always bring back plants and seeds. The friends on the Charante know a couple down the lane who are retired farmers and have an immaculate vegetable garden. I asked them how long the patch had been used and they said 400 years. Phew.

I live in Charente-Maritime, so right next door to your friends. :-) My husband's grandparents live in Angouleme and until recently he kept a massive veg plot on the go, and like you say it was immaculate. The French do seem to love gardening too, well who wouldn't in a mild climate?

                Hi Melanie, welcome to GC.
What's your soil like there? I suspect it's better than Lot-et-Garonnaise clay:)
Are you near the coast? That will influence what does best in your new garden.

                Hi there,

Thanks for the welcome. :-) I'm half an hour away from Cognac, and an hour away from the coast, so not surprising the village is surrounded by vines. No clay here, we've light well draining soil but very rocky! At the moment I'm fretting over sick Sacred Bamboo which I've posted about.

Welcome to GC. I have friends who live in Le Bugue and their climate is pretty good for growing so many plants as long as you don't mind doing a bit of watering in the summer! They grow the most amazing Roses and Iris.

Welcome to GC, I'm to the east of you in La Creuse. I try and keep track of my gardening year through my blog - it reminds me of what went well or not! Both irises and daylilies do really well.

Hi there. I love the variety of colour in the iris you find grown here, so vivid. My French husband's grandfather was up at 5am every summer morning watering his huge garden. I tend to water ours late at night, getting up at 5am is too much of a thought. :-)

Hello, or should I say Bonjour? :-D I've got iris in the garden but not daylilies so I might give them a go. Thanks for the tip.

We have a good mixture of knowledgeable gardeners on here and I'm sure you will soon be picking up tips and tricks.

Grab a cuppa and have a good read through and don't be shy about asking questions
