Hi all, just a quick question for you.

Except for the normal, Busy Lizzies, Pansies, Begonias, does anyone know of any annual bedding I can put in now in a shady area ?

I've read on the tintetnettywebbythingy that China Asters ( Callistephus ) and Tobacco plants ( Nicotiana ) do well but I always thought these were for sunny areas.

I just want to put something in for the summer as I want to put in White Foxgloves in the Autumn for next year.

PS... It's got to be something fairly common that I can go out and buy now.

    Thanks all :)

Hi Anthony. Have a look at this link for Long Acre Plants where they specialise in plants for shade :blue thumb:

I bought some stuff from there last year and they were good quality.

          00000000000000000000000000015810Thanks both :)

@merleworld , that's a good site, but it's not really what I'm looking for. I only want something for this summer as I know what's going in there permantly.

@Sheal , thank you very muchly. I had completely forgotten about Mimulus. I didn't know about Antirrhinum either.

I'm going to The Range later so I'll have a look.

          Thank you both :)

PS, knowing my mom she'll go for Busy Lizzies....... again :)

I'm another fan of snaps in the shade. The paler coloured ones look good in shade. :dbgrtmb:

I was going to say foxgloves, if you could find some ready to flower, but you have already got that covered (I have pastel shades, and they are stunning in the shadey parts of the garden).

If you want to go out and buy now you are going to be rather restricted to the most popular things as outlined above. I'd add Coleus to that list as a possibility.

Depending on how deep the shade is, in light/medium shade things like marigolds and calendulas can do well and are generally widely available.

Talk your mum into Mimulus Anthony, they put on a much better display than Busy Lizzies. :)

I agree Sheal, we used to grow the Mimulus as perennials. I think I'll have to find some seeds and have some of those next year.

We settled on Nicotiana ( Tobacco plants ) in the end.
Some nice white ones with a red picotee edge and some red ones. There's also a climbing Fuchsia going in there, it's a new one called Pink Fizz.

Good choice Anthony, some Nicotiana are perfumed and I don't mean the nicotine.

Seriously though, they go around the back garden, mostly into wall-baskets, but there are some hardies planted direct.
