@merleworld where did you get the wedding gown hydrangea? I'm thinking as a wedding present for a friend.
You have been busy buying, I'm jealous!
I've not bought a single plant this year (excluding the no show dahlia cuttings I ordered last September). Everything I've done has been cuttings or seeds.
What do you think the problem with the DA roses is? Did you buy bare root or containers?

    Hi Merleworkd,

Which " Purple Rain " did you buy as there are two.

Purple Rain itself is a lovely aubergine colour and is an upright hardy.

The other one is " Giant Marbeller Purple Rain " which is a big blousy double red/purple, but is a trailer so really needs a hanging basket or something similar to show off its flowers.

It's the Giant Marbeller variety Anthony - buy them every year because they are soooo bootiful. They're in a tall planter so they can trail down the sides :dbgrtmb:

Why do you buy them every year, they're a perennial and easy to keep over Winter ?

They aren't really hardy and I can't be faffed to overwinter anything which doesn't survive in the garden.

I was feeling quite proud of myself for donating another Rhododendron to the church cemetery [IMG] Only for the fact that I managed to prize one away from myself and let it go.

Then I had to go and buy another one [IMG]

To be fair this is one I've been after for a couple of years but whenever I've tried to buy one, Millais Nurseries have always sold out. It's a stunner though - Apricot Fantasy.

Oops, seems like everybody else is being really good and I'm being a spendthrift :snorky:

Just been to B&Q to buy 3 bags of horse manure, 3 bags of ericaceous compost and 3 bags of general purpose compost. While I was there I happened to notice they had a Red Emperor japanese maple. There was one tiny twig on it which had a couple of dead leaves on and a few leaves with tiny bits of leaf scorch, so I managed to haggle them down from £42 to £30. I'll soon have that in a pot and filling out a bit :blue thumb:

I also bought two upright fuchsias for the border - Jollies Nantes and Paula Jane.

Out of interest Merle do you do your haggling at the till? In our local B&Q the cashiers seem, how do I put it subtlely... utterly disinterested in anything plant related :snork:. Do you haggle with them or someone milling around the garden section?

As you can tell I'm a novice haggler but am sure I could find a lovely but slightly damaged Acer myself this weekend!

I have never haggled for anything. I pay the posted price. I do look for good values but I never ever dispute the price. My Mother beat that one into me. She used to tell me it was un........

I have probably missed many opportunities to save a little but, you know, once trained... :dunno:

@Ben James At the till. Just point out the damaged bits and ask them for some money off. Last time the cashier discounted it herself but this time the cashier called someone over from the gardening section and they discounted it :) If there is another one there which isn't damaged, tell them you prefer the shape of the damaged one.
