I keep getting a problem with my runner bean/climbing bean seed's as after planting them in my allotment when I go back a few days later or even the next day there is a hole where the beans would have been and no seed's.Last it got to the stage where I grew them at home in pot's and planted them in the allotment when they were big enough this also happens with my broad bean seeds.Could anyone tell me what might be doing this.I though maybe Rat's or Mice squirrels would not be around at night cat's would not eat them and have never known a pigeon to dig seeds out.Any advice appreciated.Thank's

Another allotment holder gave me some rat poison which I have left near to where the beans are planted.Have made that no other animals/birds can get them as have put them in a small dish and put one of those plastic containers you get when you buy tomatoes over it with a small hole cut out at the end the same as a bait box you would get from a pest control person and will check it in the morning.

Runner beans leave their seed cotyledons below ground, so even after you've kept mice away from them for a while after germination, after planting out there's still something left that mice (and voles) will want to dig down into the ground to eat and whilst doing so they will also destroy the bean's roots.

I now always move my runner bean locations, rotorvate shortly before planting out (rather than into ground possibly full of a maze of intact vole tunnels, then plant through a Mypex barrier on the surface of the ground, and have never again had the problem of a mouse/vole burrowing along a row of beans eating through their roots and killing the lot ever again.

What happens if a hedgehog comes along, noses the tomato punnet out of the way, and eats the rat poison? Here in Torfaen rat traps of any sort are banned from allotments, and rightly so.

You would choose a dead rat over a live hedgehog? That is sad.

 who said that  ? What I said was rats carry leptospirosis and I would put poison down for the rat but take every precaution not to give hedgehog's/other wildlife easy access to the poison, a human life is more important than a hedgehog's the rat needs to go and that's how I would deal with it,

How you would deal with it is your choice :).
