    Japan is a bit different. There is a reason why they are facing an economic crisis due to too many old people and not enough youth. Their horrendously strict approach to everything means that too many of their potential young workforce either top themselves or leave the country at their earliest opportunity.

      @clueless1 ,

      This is a seven year old boy we're talking about. Nothing to do with economics, politics or teenage suicide.

      This was child abuse, pure and simple.

          It has everything to do with those things.

          We're talking about a culture where anyone who does anything wrong or let anybody down is seen to have let down their ancestors and descendents too.

          It is a massively broken culture that leads to a very high youth suicide rate because many people simply can't cope with the pressure they are placed under by the impossibly high expectations of their parents, teachers and peers.

          I'm not saying it's right. Clearly it isn't. I'm merely pointing out that we shouldn't be surprised when people under such cultural pressure do something outrageous. Besides, if we pick on one Japanese family, then surely we must mention that in several cultures, a girl born to a poor family is at great risk of meeting with a bizarre and unlikely demise. Or in some cultures kids are routinely physically abused in the belief it will make them grow up to be better athletes or soldiers for their country.

          Can understand where your coming from Japan is quite broken in their "we must please and obey" ways. And the creepy cartoon porn culture.. now I'm going off on one.. but it does all lead to a messed up society and some people doing crazy things to try to comply.

          Anyhow, I think what Anthony was trying to say was we were discussing what has been in the news recently.. which is children and without due care..

          Which brings me to your other paragraph..

          Not sure which news site it was on and I haven't read it, I don't want to.. but there was a headline to the effect of "17 yr old Egyptian girl dies during a femal circumcision".. Now that is messed up. FGM is something I think that needs outright banning worldwide, it is sick, horrifying and torture. Completely not needed.

          And if we're going on about other countries, can we mention the UK? I took myself off Facebook about 5 months ago as I am disgusted with what people are coming out with. And having a quick nose on my partners earlier I'm glad I'm still off it, people joking about the migrant crisis and then going mental over the gorilla.. sorry but don't 100 lives mean anything? Yes they are migrants (something I don't particularly want to air my views on) but they are still people though.

          I'll shush now :)

              Sorry I didn't mean to give the impression that I was disagreeing. Although reading it back it kind of reads like I was.

              I was aiming to show how in some cultures, what we call child abuse (and rightly so in my opinion ) some cultures consider normal or even somehow righteous and honourable. I hoped to make people realise that the odd case that makes it to our news is not necessarily rare and unusual. But at the same time, I was trying to make the point that often the problem is deeply ingrained in culture, and while culture does evolve, it is often a slow process of change.

                Ah no worries @clueless1 no apology needed. It's flat text, people take it how they want, conversation is different, plus it's "touchy" subjects so.. :smile:

                But yes I knew that was your point.. I went off on one a bit sorry. Oops. Those other cultures might find our Sunday roast an absolute abomination..:dunno:
