I saw the clashes on the news before the game. It was sickening to see, and actually put a dampener on the whole thing for me. I just do not understand it. As if the security forces in France haven't already got there work cut out with the potential of terrorist threats, they also have to contend with these mindless thugs. During the Welsh game today it was commented on several times, how the Welsh were partying and celebrating with the French and how good the atmosphere was. All I have heard today is about the violence between English and Russian 'supporters'.

And now two English are in hospital with critical life threatening injuries.

I'll probably upset someone here but I say..... So What to them you get what you deserve.

It's a case of don't throw glasses, broken bottles and chairs at other people if you don't expect to get the same treatment back.

It's the families left over here I feel sorry for.

 

This is why I hate football. It's stupid. The game is stupid. The fans are more stupid.

I've been to a few rugby matches where the fans are not segregated. Everyone gets on. Sure, each side cheers for their own, but they celebrate the triumphs of each team. Football is more like war. Utterly stupid and pointless and often supported by idiots. It's a shame because I'm sure there are people who see it as a game, which is all it is.

 

The Welsh fans were a very positive story, apparently partying with the locals the night before and the atmosphere in the stadium was fantastic. The singing of the Welsh national anthem at any sporting event always gets me emotional.



No other fans in the world sing their anthem with such passion and so beautifully ('tis called the "land of song" after all). The sound of a Welsh male voice choir has no equal in my eyes. There's a special tone to it which gives me goosebumps.

But back to the footie - I am so so proud of the boys for winning yesterday. You can see how much it meant to all the players.

Incidentally it was the first time a British team has ever won their first game at a European competition.

I'd really like to see this being a discussion/celebration/commiseration thread about the football though, so if it's going to turn into a debate about the violence, I've started a different thread so could I please request that people kindly use that so it doesn't spoil the footie for those of us who who want to enjoy it?

If you don't like football, you're not obliged to participate
