Picked the first of mine today, wonderful taste - I'd forgotten how nice home grown spuds are, puts supermarket Jersey Royals to shame:

      Apologies.. never grown them before.
Started 3 spuds, think they are mains, in a sack earthed up as they grew. I've got flowers just about to open am I right thinking the spuds are only now growing, wait for flowers to drop before digging up? Do they need watering daily now or when dry? Also they are falling over with own weight should I prop them?

If you don't ask you don't find out :)

They will be forming, yep, leave them till the flowers have gone over and then have a furtle underneath to see what they're like.

I'm guessing with just 3 you're gonna eat them pretty much straight away, but with bigger crops you'd leave the haulms to die back and then wait 2 weeks before digging so that the skins will harden for storage :spinning:

@leeski - I'm a beginner too, but sure one of the pros will be along to give advice which I'll also be interested in hearing.

My Nicola plants are flowering and look very lush. It is a pity that the top growth does not, as I understand it, equate to crop below. All a bit like the dip into the bran bin at the village fete I suppose :noidea:

Other varieties are looking good and soonish to bud/flower by the looks of it.

You usually wait until the tops start to wilt and die, you then cut them off and leave the tatties for a couple of weeks to "season"(this makes them better for storing). How ever if you just want a few for eating straight the way, then you may get a reasonable crop once they finish flowering, just remember to keep them watered whilst the tubers are swelling.

These are not flowering yet, so will be a couple of weeks or more yet, they get 2 pints of water every other day at the moment, this might increase when they are flowering, depending on the weather. I have made drainage holes in the bottom of the growbags, so I just poke my finger in, if it's dry they get water, seem to be healthy enough plants.
