I am currently waging war on the slugs in my garden. You name it and I am trying it.

Any hoo - my compost bin is at the other side of my garden from the potatoes, carrots, peas, beans, broc, courgette, corn etc.

This morning when I lifted the compost bin lid to put kitchen scraps in, I noticed two enormous slugs inside the lid. Huge.

Are slugs a benefit to my compost bin? Should I be ridding my garden of these slugs as well? Should I pour nematodes into the bin.

Right off out into the garden now - lets see if I spy any little buggers.

In the compost bin they are OK, don't think anyone ever had a 100% slug free garden.

Hi i use the slug pellets from B&M, Home Bargains, Poundland they are really good,i think there are more slugs and snails this year due to the weather we have had, give them a try they certainly work for me.

I am using the same and keeping them at bay i do put lots down though, one thing i have noticed is rats coming into my garden and eating the pellets in a certain area two jobs in one.

I never use slug pellets as they can be consumed by Song Thrushes inside the slugs, I read there is a finger of blame being pointed for the massive drop in thrush numbers due to slug pellets use. Traps are a better control method.

Hi. Slugs are winning I think. Will be out there tomorrow to put up more copper tape.

A slug free garden would be lush, but what I was trying to establish was if slugs are beneficial to the compost bin? Are they serving a purpose in there? Also beer traps - does beer equal larger? Silly question, but it may be something in beer that attracts them that larger doesn't have. Beer traps is my last attack.

I don't have issues with slugs but with snails. I have found it fairly successful to break up egg shells and scatter them all under my plants. Particularly the hostas who seem to suffer the most.

Since snails have soft bellies, the sharp edges of the shells must bother them so perhaps this would work with slugs? The calcium is good too :)

As a reference to how many shells in my small gardens -average about a dozen or more a wek. They keep dissappearing so that's nice too. I also save them all winter and blitz the gardens before any spring sprouts.

A friend told me he thinks the birds see this as a challenge to them and that's why they keep covering my vehicles with white wash...:snorky:

Yep, they go for lager as well. As a few of you know, I left a can of lager out on the patio on a dark evening, went back for it and without looking took a swig, putting a 4 inch slug straight into my mouth :yikes:

I have a collection of tall jars in strategic points, I push them into the soil so they remain upright, the cheapest beer/lager the supermarkets have, usually 4 for £1, about a quarter fill the jars, I place bits of broken roof tiles on top, leaving a gap for the slugs to enter, better off dead.
I would worry about them alive in your compost bin, the blighters breed, and your compost could end up full of slug eggs.

I've just been out - removing them from the dahlias.

I just throw them under the hedge - I can't bring myself to use slug pellets or to kill them.

How do you get rid of your slugs?

I've got that copper tape stuff around all of my pots thinking it would keep them out.. As I stood there drinking a brew yesterday I watched one cross it no problem :( as for slugs/snails in the compost bin, is it really that bad because mine has loads of them lol

I bought some of the wool slug pellets today as my runner beans are being shredded. You have to surround the plant so it is a bit expensive. Will let you know how it works out.

I bought some of this today.

It had better work as it cost me ten quid, I've been using the so called organic pellets up to now and IMO they dont work.
I've got two rows of spuds without leaves at the moment, some slugs but its mostly snails causing the damage.
The snails are even well up in trees, its so damp they have no fear of drying out.

That liquid sounds like a better solution than the indiscriminate pellets, you must have a big problem, I've had slugs and snails attack potato tubers, but never the leaves.
