I do a bit of macro work, you do need a special lens to get the best results, but with a DSLR, that's not a problem. Usually they have a fixed shortish focal length, though you can get acceptable images with any lens with practice, using a tripod can help too.

Yay! Managed to go for a walk down by the river yesterday evening, although mum wasn't happy about it. Took some photos of people on the river, and a cricket match - so quintessentially British, you have no idea!! Don't know how they will look, as I won't be able to download them until next week.
Hope to get away again at some point this weekend, but can't guarantee it...

@Trunky, Miss Jiff and I like your picture in the June comp and we thought you may like this, a 1930's print of Ipswich Dock, can you see the likeness? Would that be Cranfields Mill with the barge moored infront of it? DSCF8819.JPG

I think you're right @Jiffy, I believe it is Cranfields flour mill. The mill finally ceased operations in 1999, ending over one hundred years of flour production on that site. The building was demolished a few years later.

The Ipswich Docks area has undergone huge redevelopment over the past few years, a lot of the old industrial buildings (and the industries within them) have gone and the whole area has been re-branded as 'The Waterfront'.

The building on the left of the picture is the Customs House, of one the few old buildings which still stands.

Edit: Just had another look at that print and my photo side by side. I see what you mean Jiffy, they are remarkably similar. It looks as if the old painting in the print was done from a position only 50 yards or so from where I took the photo.

You have entered a snow scene in June's photo competition @David K. Are you aware that photo's must be taken in the competition's current month? :)

Now I'm confused (easily achievable) I voted for 'Nice day for it', but understood it to have been entered by 'Maurins' (or was that just the watermark on the pic?).....bear with me, I am very new.
Ah well, I'll just delete my vote and wait a while.

I've entered quite a lot of shots into competitions at club level and believe, if the entry conforms to the theme, then it should be acceptable.
I do understand that this is a monthly affair (I've fell foul of it already) but find it rather restricting.
