Just discovered I have been setting my rear view wing mirrors incorrectly for 50 years ! I am always aware of the infamous blinds spots on rear view mirrors , and set my mirrors , as most folk do , so you could just see a little of the flank of the car as a reference point . This is not how to do it ! Chuck below will explain how it is done :) I have reset mine and it does feel a bit weird - I'll see how it goes.

Hmmm, I see where he is coming from (pardon the pun) :snork:
The only thing is.....if you compare the before and after, I would say there is a motorcyclist blindspot now. I drive the A5D everyday, and loads of motorbikes shoot up the middle overtaking/undertaking. Have a look back () around 3:45 - 4:10
I think I will stick to my normal position, because...let's face it, who doesn't ever do the over the shoulder check before changing lane??? We all do it don't we?
Personally, I would rather see that centre line.

@Jiffy - I am the same. This is only one of the reasons that I think it should be compulsory for everyone to drive a large vehicle for a period of time (under instruction of course) before they are given their car licence.

Yep, I also see what he is saying, my mirrors kind of have split in them, so only one part of the mirror shows the rear end of my vehicle, the split part is at a slightly different angle and shows further up the side, difficult to explain .

I also use my mirrors for reversing, so seeing the rear end is pretty important.

I am thinking more in terms of a couple of weeks behind the wheel of something large (not articulated, but around 7.5t size) - I am sure that Jiffy will agree with me that no matter how good a driver you are, your driving perspective and style changes dramatically when you have learned to drive a large vehicle; if nothing else, you learn to read the road much further ahead, and the net result of that is that you are generally a lot less flustered/stressed, and in turn that reduces the risk of mistakes being made.

Is that what those mirrors at the side of the car are for? I thought it was so that you could see when your car gets dirty :heehee:

I worked with car transporters, 7,8,9, and 11 car. Artics and draw-bars. The car transporters face their own challenges due to the top deck sticking out when turning. People don't realise just how careful those drivers have to be. I have a few horror stories :(

When I was tested for my PSV licence by the County Council (long time ago) they didn't test for anything like that. The test drive was only ten minutes!

People's behaviour around large vehicles astounds me to be honest - as you say, they just do not realise what the driver is having to consider, watch and plan to get these things around our roads, most of which are relatively small/narrow and riddled with numerous surface imperfections which as you know can have a significant effect on how their vehicle handles.

In some respect, we have kinda created the problem ourselves - the majority of professional drivers make it look easy, purely as a result of many years experience.
