Orchids

Don't think this is classed as gardening but I just put my none flowering orchid in a vase of " water only " type of growing . I was wondering if any member has done this and how the orchid survived.

 

Never heard of growing orchids in water.
What type is it?
Most tend to like good drainage, but I think a few of the terrestrial types can grow in boggy conditions.

 

It's a phalaenopsis. I'm trying this method because it now refuses to flower.
I saw this method on YouTube and some people have had wonderful results,
There's also the Hydroponics method there too.

 

Hi.. I have had some bad luck with a Phal that refuses to flower.. So I have put it in water culture aswell... Almost immediately I noticed the roots going crazy and leaves have all firmed up.. 2 new leaves have come up in less then a month.. I can't beleive how good this method is.. Just change the water every week and and also feed as you normally would feed in the water. I hope you get some results!! Good luck

Not sure if you noticed thats a 7 year old post and apart from good olde @pete don't think those other members are active, though an interesting point which we had not heard of before.

However looking at some of the ytubes they use a partially enclosed vessle with just a bit of water in the bottom, so in effect they are creating the kind of environment the phals nautrally have eg the branching of a tree etc where the water collects and its roots can grow into.

We have a dozen or so phals in the greenhouse using the more conventional potting bark which do re-flower regularly, but wiil try one or two using this new method to see if it works better.

Will you be trying it ?

Well, here goes nothing !
This spotted fellow has never flowered to my knowledge, so I’ve given him a root trim, all the dried up ones gone, and I shall now be watching him like a hawk !

Just about to try one of mine with the Full hydro method, found one of these cheapish jars in Sainsburys, about 6" x 3" which seems to house all the roots nicely.



From this sensible video, seems they can look worse before they look better.

 

Just fitted an orchid into that pot though still got to give the roots a thorough clean.

Logically it does seem a good way to mimic their natural habitat, though a good few years ago used to be in a now defunct Orchid forum but cannot ever remember them using this method, apart from the Vanda orchids which used a very tall and expensive glass though only for when in flower and on display.
