    Hi All,

After a very long 4-5 months I am finally back! Wahooooo! It's good to catch up with you crazy bunch.

However, I have a couple of problems...

    1. My french beans are not climbing they have stayed the same height for about 2 months. I am so confused as they were big when we put them in as we left it a little later due to the weather deciding it was going to freak out :hate-shocked:

    and

    2. My courgettes have not grown alot either. This time last year they were a huge bush but this year they are scrawny and straggly.

So yet again I ask can any of you help the fallen :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

    Thankyou
    Bex
    xx

I had a year like that a couple of years ago, I put it down to my compost, changed my supplier, local hardware shop only has one type.

        Wotcha Bexy :)

Same problem, not been consistently warm. Goin on the spreadability of butter, before the past few days there has only been 1 or 2 days where the stuff was warm enough to spread. So if the butter's not having it, neither are the plants.

Not much of a summer so far

At least you can nuke the butter in a microwave to speed up the process ;)

My Runner beans have reached the top of their canes but they look weak with small leaves, I'm putting it down to the weather in particular the rain washing away nutrients. I gave them a feed yesterday hoping they will pick up.

My beans are not looking as good as they normally do for this time of year. They'll have to survive on the nutrients in the soil. I rarely feed them and then only once the beans have formed. They're getting flowers now. :dbgrtmb:

                    Rhubarb has been doing fantastically.

@Zigs spreadability of butter?? I have never heard of that gardening technique lol ;)

                        @shiney I hope so, I have a show in less than 2 months.... :love30:

@"M" I know someone who grew bean sprouts by blasting them in the microwave on a daily basis however he was very crazy :th scifD36:

@JWK My tomatoes love it though this year they have been going bonkers...:thud:

I am thinking of putting a feed on them that my local trading hut on the allotment has they call it potato special and it has a combo of 5-10-10 in it do you think this will work? I have been using coffee instead of muck this year and by golly do the onions and runner beans love it. This is what I don't understand my runner beans are at the top of the pergola style support made out of netting and canes but the french beans are still how they were months ago....

image.jpeg If you have any chicken pellets and if you have I would sprinkle some along the rows and water in.A lot of my plants were coming along very slow despite copious amounts of compost spread onto the ground and rotavated in,but once the pellets got down into the roots the stuff has started to move and I can't believe the size of the leaves and some of the stalks on our rhubarb this year:biggrin: This is what they look like after two pickings...:snorky:

                          :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

There are a lot of stories about using coffee grounds on the soil so I looked into a lot of the research that was done. There are conflicting reports but most of them say that the grounds should definitely not be used directly on the soil. They should be mixed in with normal garden compost and left for at least three months. If possible, add some wood ash as well as the usual grass and leaves. The coffee grounds should then help break down the compost much better.

                          A couple of quotes:-

"There's also a lot of Magnesium and Potassium, both of which plants really like; but not a lot of phosphorus (the "fruiting and flowering nutrient") or calcium, a mineral that many plants crave..."

"Keep in mind that uncomposted coffee grounds are NOT a nitrogen fertilizer. Coffee grounds have a carbon-to-nitrogen ration of about 20 to 1, in the same range as animal manure. Germination tests in Eugene showed that uncomposted coffee grounds, added to soil as about one-fourth the volume, showed poor germination and stunted growth in lettuce seed. Therefore, they need to be composted before using near plants."

I also decided to experiment but not by putting them on my beans. I put a small amount into my compost heaps and spread the rest, neat, on the stinging nettle patch alongside the heaps. The nettles have turned yellow and flopped and are not forming flowers! Sorry, butterflies

A friend tried spreading the grounds around his beans. They have grown poorly and the leaves are turning yellow.

If you have dug the grounds into the soil around your crops then try adding some wood ash - but not too much (although brassicas will like the ash).

So.... I found out what happened to my french beans,

I may or may not have read the packet wrong...

They turned out to be dwarf french beans...:wallbanging:

On a happy note they really loved the coffee this year and are cropping very nicely :lunapic 130165696578242 5:
