I only got my first close views of a Water Rail last autumn, often heard but not seen, sounds like a squealing pig!

Love the Willow Warbler shot, plumage looks fresh so it could be a youngster.
It might be down here in a few weeks, a majority of migrants (birds:smile:) will stay here for a while before setting off. The first Osprey has appeared in Poole harbour this weekend.:blue thumb:

I was fishing yesterday and had 3 Ospreys for company for most of the day, I think it was a male with 2 youngsters that kept calling for food all day.

A humble ladybird first thing this morning (she chose a lovely comfy bed :heehee: )

Then she noticed me and decided it was time to fly away home

We get all sorts of things flying around here.
Having our morning coffee in the garden on Sunday and spotted these in the distance ...

This was the best I could get for a "close-up" with my little point and shoot ...

Whilst working in the garden yesterday I was enjoying the wonderful sounds of the birds all around. It brought a thought, and a question, to mind.

We have hundreds of birds chattering and cheeping all day long with the occasional loud screeching of the woodpeckers in flight. Most of the time the birds seem to be merrily singing, interspersed with some warning chatterings (mainly when cats are around). I guess that most of it must be mating calls or friendly discussions.

The robins that help me with my digging tend to be silent most of the time whilst we're working but give an occasional cheep, or perch on my shoulder, if I've stopped digging.

So, now to the question. Most birds are pleasantly noisy little blighters but are birds of prey silent all the time?

Well, we've got a few Buzzards here and sometimes they will be flying around then they will screech, so not silent all the time

Just got back from a holiday in a gîte in the south of France. It was quite hot and dry there and the garden contained a lovely concrete bird bath which we filled up in the hope of attracting some bird life. We were rewarded by seeing several blue tits turn up every morning to enjoy their early morning ablutions. :)

We were discussing last night about the lack of flies around. We've hardly seen any this year :dbgrtmb:. Not all that many wasps, although we've had three wasp nests. Unfortunately we had to get rid of two of them. One was being made in the loft and another in the compost heap. We try not to bother them unless they're in the way.

Bees have been plentiful (we have the right plants for them) but not so many butterflies apart from the white ones with the black wing tips.
