There was a lot of "keeping the public busy" and bucking up morale so taking un"wanted" metal was part of the campaign to make the public feel as though they were doing their part. The Government did a lot of smoke and mirrors during the War. They told the public that some explosions were caused by gas mains when they were V2 missiles until they could no longer use that, etc.:dunno::snork:

As regards the photos, the germans did the same. A few years ago, I was shown photos taken by the Luftwaffe of a place called Rivington Pike. They used it as a landmark to line up on Liverpool.

One of the things that I find curious about that period id that the germans never managed to find the largest air base in Europe during that period. Despite the fact it was situated between Liverpool and Manchester. Places they bombed on a regular basis.

Even more interesting than a cast iron aeroplane was the coal powered jet the germans were designing at the end of the war. Some documentation suggests that it was built, and was in fact the first aircraft to break the sound barrier.

I have visions of someone shovelling coal into a gigantic jet engine, and trying to still remain upright as it goes through the sound barrier.

I think coal fire engines are good for rail and road............but the power to weight ratio might get you to the end of the runway............but not in the air!!:dunno::heehee:

Well, unfortunately the power to weight ratio would make that vintage bunkum, SG!!:dunno::heehee:

I can remember from childhood in the West Mids, if there was a bad smell in the air it was always "oh that`s the glue factory"

That why there were rag and bone men..the tatter with his horse and cart.

But now that strikes another question, you try and get a bone from the butchers or the supermarket and they will tell you they have none because all the bones are collected by the bone man
