    The law has been changed.

From today you will need to pay for a TV licence if you watch BBC on iPlayer or on a mobile phone.

They say they will not be monitoring people :nonofinger: :th scifD36: - but be aware! :gaah:

With no sign in protection linked to a licence [1], and no monitoring of IP addresses accessing iPlayer [2], how are they going to catch anybody?

[1] Which could be shared with friends and family, etc.
[2] Kind, elderly 75+ neighbours who get free TV licence can share wifi connection with their helpful neighbours who do their shopping for them ;)

Of course I, like yourself @Scrungee, would never advocate breaking the law but it's perfectly legal (at the moment) for someone to go to a licenced site [1] (or could possibly be public wifi access) and watch or download from there.

I think that most of those people who watch without a TV, or a connected TV, are unlikely to take the slightest notice of this change in law. :noidea:

I'd like to see the BBC put a block on their programmes so that you had to buy a subscription to view them. Much the same way as pay per view film/music videos are now.

I think that they would go out of business pretty quickly if that happened. They're already being pushed by the government to curb their expenses and I don't think that a subscription charge would be able to replace the licence fee. So they would have to take advertising as well.

I watch a few BBC programmes but mainly the News. If that was a subscription service I would watch it on one of the commercial stations.

The administration of free licences for senior citizens would be unmanageable.

At least, at present, they don't operate the free licences the way they operate the winter fuel payment. We didn't want to claim it, back in the old days :old:, but were told that they have no way to cancel the payment because they send it automatically! So ours goes to charity. Last year they brought in a system where you can return it, through the Post Office, if you don't want it. A rather stupid system seeing that it comes in by Direct Debit in the first place. We continue to give ours to charity.

Back in the old days the winter fuel payment was £20. (Started in 1997.)

The free TV licence is worked in a much better way. To start getting it you have to claim it. So at age 75 all you need to do is not claim it.

Well that's me barred from watching Dr Who easily. I would happily a pound or so for pay per view.
I would also like to point out that a licence is not needed to access Radio through the iPlayer either to catch up or stream live.

So does this mean the individual watching it, say on a phone, needs to buy a licence?

Its time the licence was scrapped and the BBC was made to work for their living.
They have a totally overpaid bunch of so called stars on stupid contracts, and management sitting on their rear ends just soaking up the cash.
Its just too easy, especially when you bear in mind how biased they are regarding certain things.
And they meed to learn to talk proper as well, too many Rs being put into words.
eg. Glarsgow, plarstic to name just a couple.

Yes, unless you already have a licence for your house.

From what was being said on the news this evening that anyone trying to access iplayer on either their phone or computer, when they press on the button to start the programme will have a box come up asking the questions have you or have you not got a tv license and you have to tick the right box,ie,yes I have a license to be enabled to watch the programme. How it can be proved whether or not you have a license I do not know and don't know how they will know either.

Shiney, I'm not talking about replacing the license. I'm just saying that if you use the internet to access it then you pay for it.

How to prove you have a license is easy..... You could have a box to type your license number in.

                    What next???
We will need a licence to log into Gardeners corner at some stage?

At some point it will have to be realised that the BBC needs to scrap the licence fee, it's outdated and unenforceable.
