I think it is safe to say that I have got the 'bug' for this wine making lark, and I am already scheming my next move..... Currently, I am looking at a recipe that might be similar to the carrot whiskey that @Zigs mentioned; it contains wheat, which has me a tad confused. Would it need to be whole wheat grains, or would shredded wheat do the same job? The recipe is: Carrots, wheat, Sugar, Lemons, Oranges, White Grape Concentrate, Water, Yeast & Nutrient. The other one I am looking at is Ribena Wine - - the recipe states that a 12oz bottle of Ribena will make a gallon of wine; I equate 12oz to being 355ml, which seems to be remarkably little juice to base a gallon of wine on?
It is hard to stop once you get going Yep, that looks like the recipe I wouldn't use shredded wheat as it'll go soupy. Think I used to use a litre of hi juice concentrate per gallon, not the one with sweeteners though
Just be carefull if you buy Wheat as it may have ergot in there and you don't want that in you, it look like a bit of Rat poo and look for Rat poo as well Ergot, pic from the net Make sure you by good wheat not feed wheat as you can have a lot of rubbish in it and it's the cheaps wheats to buy
I'm looking at another one - peach based - and it states that Kitzinger or Tokay Sherry yeast is best. Would it matter if I used the wine yeast that I have?
So if I go with the carrot one, I would need - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Youngs-Who...d=1472992740&sr=8-2&keywords=wholegrain+wheat
Also look out for Fusarium in the grain Fusarium Pic fron the net Google Fusarium and Ergot for more info
Nasty looking wee blighters them @Jiffy - thanks for the heads up I need to try and find wheat nearer to home, as it costs more to ship it via Amazon than the stuff itself does
That's where I buy my turbo yeast from in Somerton Don't Sainsbury's sell wheat? If not, local health food shop.
Not seen wheat in Sainsburys, but there is a wee health food shop not all that far from my work, so if I go with the peach one I will nip in there.
Its only going to be a kilo I think - its as cheap as chips, but the postage kills it when it is done online. Looking about, I reckon I should be able to get it for less than £2 at the local health food place though, so not deadly. I'm currently waiting on Mrs C looking through the recipes to decide which one she wants to try next. I've got kinda sad too - I have got a spreadsheet where I am costing the recipes out to total cost and per bottle cost. Surprisingly, the ones that 'look' expensive (like the pineapple wine) actually aren't by the time it gets to the cost of each bottle.
Do you have a small miller near by as they sometimes sell wheat, but what i will say is to check every bag you get, i know some one who bought some wheat from a shop and it had ergot in the bag as well but the person new what it was and sent it back with and very strong complait about it
