A failed attempt to get a decent shot of the Osprey with a fish, the Osprey didn't fail!

I spotted about three dozen talkative geese flying south at dusk this evening. Such an unusual sight and sound. :)

There were about 1000 at Hengistbury head @Sheal , mostly in the car park near the restaurant, no surprises there! Huge numbers gather over Christchurch in the evenings for their celebrated 'murmurations', many were sub adult, half mottled but some were beautifully marked like this one

I used to have way over a hundred at times on the electric cables that ran over my garden, but since the cables have been put underground I only see a dozen or so at any one time. I like Starlings, they are such characters. :)

Southern hawker laying eggs - please could anyone explain to me why it lays eggs anywhere but inside the pond and how would the larvae later make their way to the pond?

                  Nice one @HsuH :)

The eggs would suffocate under water, and get eaten by fish.

That does make sense. But how on earth do the larvae manage to get themselves to the water since some of the eggs were laid quite a few metres away from the pond? And also, in order to avoid being eaten, roughly how big or how old do they need to be before living in the water?

                  Good afternoon people.
Now, I maybe a bit silly but.........
I've had a lovely, productive summer with a multitude of birds in the garden and surrounding trees. Have taken loads of photos and videos and got a great deal of pleasure watching Wrens building a nest in one of my tit boxes. Although after spending days in front of the nest with camera, I missed the departure of the young.
However, for the last few weeks, there is not a bird to be seen anywhere apart from the usual pigeons. Am I missing something here? The feeders are not being touched, no bird song and nothing to be seen in surrounding trees. I know I'm probably missing the point but last year at this time, there was so much activity. Any answers and Micky taking welcomed. Haha.
                  Have a lovely Sunday. Russ

That sounds ominous @Rustler. The only ideas I have at the moment are possibly new cat/cats in your immediate surroundings or perhaps a Sparrowhawk has appeared. Keep an eye out for considerable amounts of feathers on the ground together, these hawks tend to pluck their victims where they take them.

We have the same, only a few balckbirds about, but i allways thought when it goes quiet with birds is that they go the the woods about this time of year, but also the field work is going on so lots of worms in the fields

The swallowtail butterfly was back again a few weeks ago. It just loves the verbena bonariensis. butterfly.jpg butterfly 1.jpg
This cross spider (although I think I prefer it's other name 'orb weaver') was spotted happily tangling up its prey yesterday afternoon.

A family of swans on Swan Lake (Elterwater)

When we were kids this was known as travelling in a 'crocodile'. It doesn't seem quite so appropriate in this sort of situation.
