Ravi Shankar KBE was the world famous sitar player that George Harrison said was the best teacher in the world.

He played classical Indian music that may not appeal to many people in this country.

As I usually do, I post videos that have some connection with each other. It may surprise you that there's a connection between the one above and this next one.

That is why I love this thread so much, I get to hear music I wouldn't even *think* of choosing and then, I get a lovely surprise! Thank you Shy Knee, I enjoyed listening to Ravi

Isn't he her father or something? I don't mind a bit of Sitar, sometimes. I seem to recall something on the tv, a few years ago, might have been the Cambridge folk festival? Anyway, I think Ravi and his daughter (?) played. Really mesmerising, very good.

@Freddy Yes you're correct but slightly wrong :heehee:

Nora Jones is his daughter - out of wedlock.

He had two marriages (his first wife Annapurna Devi was also a renowned sitar player), a long term relationship with Kamali Shastri (a dancer) and a shorter relationship (eight years) with Sue Jones (a New York music producer). I don't charge for gossip information :snork:

The daughter that you saw at the Cambridge festival was Anoushka who also plays the sitar brilliantly.

He also had a son, Shubhendra, who was a musician, composer and graphic artist. He died at the age of 50 from pneumonia (Hilary Clinton, beware!).

Linda Perry (formerly of Four Non Blondes) is now a very successful writer and producer but she still performs solo stuff. A seriously gifted performer................

I recently discovered an American band called Dark Dark Dark..................

The Fall are one of the greatest live bands you'll ever see. Mark E Smith is not the greatest singer (one of the understatements of the year?) but what he does do is surround himself with "boss" musicians. A nine minute masterclass in how to blow the socks off of a live audience.............

Alison Moyet on the other hand does have a great voice................

By his own admission, he can't "sing" ... but, he makes a guitar sing and swoon!!!

                      I love this video ..

.. Sting is giving it his all, Mark is just sooooo laid back (!) by comparison, Clapton looks too much like a childhood friend (shouldn't have gone with the Grecian 2000 - other brands area available - it doesn't do his face justice) and Collins is just ... Collins!!!!!

The percussion in this piece drives it in tandem with her vocal range

Quite reminiscent of Adam Ant in some ways.

Telegraph Road is my 'go to' track when I want to put any audio gear through its paces; usually followed by Private Investigations. Mark Knopfler is like a God to me - I love the man - more talent in his little finger than I have in my whole body. And that clip of the four masters together!! Do you know where/when? By hokey, I would have loved to have been there for that one!
