As part of Heritage open days weekend, where you get the chance to look around buildings not normally open to the public, we visited Freston Tower near Ipswich today. It's owned by the Landmark Trust and sits in a stunning location, overlooking the River Orwell.

The tower is over 400 years old, its construction has been dated to 1578/9. No one is quite sure why is was built, possibly it was a lookout over the river estuary, it may have been part of a pleasure garden, or simply just a folly.

Bit of technical stuff here for @Zigs. Apparently the tower is built of red brick with blue diapers and during restoration was repointed using lime mortar.

The views across the Orwell estuary are simply stunning from the top of the tower, I wonder how much these views have changed over the past 400 years?

I'm afraid my knowledge of nautical matters is somewhat limited Woo, but I think it's the SB Victor, which does regular trips from Ipswich waterfront.

While waiting for the Brownsea Island boat yesterday the Lord Nelson training ship passed in front of me, I hadn't seen it since we moved from Weymouth.

Inflation hasn't hit us too badly as the rate of exchange is 86/- to the pound. Although it was 96/- to the pound before Brexit.
