So according to the television and paper news,Tesco is refusing to allow Unilever to put up the prices on their goods so over 200 items are going to be off the shelves for the foreseeable future,so I should think the Marmite lovers in this country are going to have to go elsewhere for their favourite spread and I expect people have already rushed to the stores and cleared the shelves of the last remaining stock until someone sees sense and stops all this madness:sad:

At the end of the day most people will go elsewhere to buy the stuff so I reckon Tescos will be the only losers until they give in the Unilever and the shelves are restocked and they reckon this is all because the pound has fallen so holidays abroad are going to be more expensive, savings rates will drop even further, fuel prices are climbing again if you notice and we are all doomed:snorky:

Marmite is made in the uk and one part of the ingredients come from the brewery next door, the waste produce from the brewing industies !!!!!!!!

Production costs of marmite haven't gone up (as per Jiffy's explanation :blue thumb:) but there is bound to be some effect on Unilever because most of their shareholders are in Europe. So if the dividend remains the same over here the amount the shareholders receive in Euros will be lower. This doesn't equate to a 10% hike.

It may do so for some of their other products that are manufactured abroad but I seriously doubt that 10% is a fair reflection of this. Even if the material costs have risen by 10% they aren't the full amount of the wholesale price as there are profit margins calculated into the price for marketing, transport, shelf profit etc.

Outside of Unilever, there is certainly going to be an increase in prices in our shops for some items because of the drastic drop in the value of the pound. This should only be small for things produced in this country and could possibly encourage more home grown industry.

As Kandy says, holidays abroad will cost more. At the moment it's only affecting your spending money as holiday companies have protected themselves for fluctuations in exchange rates by buying ahead. I suspect it may affect the cost of foreign holidays from mid to late summer next year but it wouldn't surprise me if the travel companies start to cash in on the situation earlier.

Holidays in this country will not be affected (maybe they will be marginally affected) and the tourist industry should see a big rise in clientele. This will be from UK citizens remaining here for their holidays but also a big rise in foreign tourists coming here because the pound is so much cheaper for them now. According to the figures that I saw for Autumn bookings here there has already been an increase of almost 10% in Americans booking to come here.

This will be a needed boost to the hotel and restaurant trade in holiday areas, and to local companies that supply them.

So it's not all doom and gloom - only partly. :noidea:

I was at a meeting the other day and some of the businesses told me that they had bought in raw materials well in advance because they foresaw the drop in the pound. This will help them ride out any sudden fluctuations.

I don't like Marmite but I do buy some of their other products. Unilever have thousands of different brands and Tesco say that they normally stock 200 of them. It wouldn't surprise me if they go into producing more of their own brands.

I use Dove (for my delicate skin :snorky:) but I don't think my annual cost is going to rise much. If you like Ben and Jerry's or Walls then watch out! They make popular hair products such as Tresemme, TIGI, Toni and Guy, Timotei etc. Some of the food brands are theirs (I don't consider Marmite as food :heehee:) such as Knorr, Liptons, Brooke Bond, PG Tips and Bovril.

EDIT: Breaking news, dispute resolved! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/business-37576897

Tesco are losing customers in droves to the likes of Aldi & Lidl who mainly sell cheaper 'unbranded' products, if Tesco are forced to impose stiff price increases on branded products they will lose even more customers.

As I was listening to this in the car on Radio 4, When I got home I checked what we had in the cupboard and it's Asda Yeast Extract, currently £1.88 for 240g. Tesco Yeast Extract is £1.75 for 225g, so £1.87 for 240g pro-rata.

Marmite was £2.35 for 250g (£2.26 for 240g) in Tesco, if they increased the price by 10% it would be £2.49/240g, some 32% more expensive than unbranded Yeast Extract that tastes the same but is far cheaper.

And that's just in major supermarkets, shopping in the likes of B&M, Home Bargains, etc., will yield even bigger savings.

I think we are all used to the oil companies whinging when the pound falls and putting up prices, but Marmite?
              They have to be joking.:snorky:

I can live without Marmite, petrol, is just a bit more important to me.

myself, I will just change to an unbranded product, Marmite is marmite is yeast extract, normally ditched as the waste product of brewing beer
Pot Noodles, Yuk, the packets of dried Chinese noodles from BnM are nicer and not as many preservatives
I agree I do buy the branded goods through habit and subtle advertising, but if Unilever want to play games, then I can too,

I do know of some people who keep the branded packaging and refill with basic stuff
Heinz tomato Ketchup, Weetabix, Porridge oats (I know not why, maybe in case Mrs Jones from next door pops in to borrow some sugar ) :-)

It seems that they have settled the dispute somehow although they've not said how just yet. They've both probably compromised and Unilever has reduced it's price rise to a more acceptable level........but that's only a guess:dunno::coffee::snorky:
