I think that has always been the case.
Which is why NATO was formed.

What concerns me about NATO is will others countries be willing to be exterminated when they help us stand up against Russia in WW3 ? I very much doubt it. The French will run, the Germans will say there no getting involved and that Aussies/newzealanders won't allow our nuclear ships to even enter their waters and hæve zero nuclear weapons.

Just like I've never been to Scotland, I reckon you've never been to certain areas of England.

We get the lowest altitude aerial combat training exercises in certain areas where the topology of the land is ideal. Not far from me on the north Yorkshire moors it's not unusual to get the sudden blast of noise that makes you nearly need new undies.

Then also not far from me, it's quite common for the army to be trampling about.

When I lived down in Hampshire, the shiny tourist attracting soldiers you speak of would get extremely drunk and rowdy and sometimes aggressive and violent in towns such as aldershot to the extent that anyone with sense would avoid going out round there.

So why do we tolerate all this? Well, I can't speak for everyone, I can only offer my own opinion. Not that it's up to me, but I approve of the air force flying around like mentalists, or the army causing the occasional traffic jam when they decide to move a convoy of heavy kit around. I even accept that soldiers sometimes get steaming drunk and a little bit naughty amongst themselves when off duty. Why? Because if some picks a fight with Britain, I want to know that those far braver and tougher than me that will be asked to defend me, are suitably trained to give them the best chance of coming home to their families afterwards.

Those people will also defend Scotland, as part of the UK.

As for the nukes. I don't see what the problem is. It is logical for Scotland to host the trident kit. As far as I know, there's nowhere else on the UK mainland where you can get straight out into deep water, so subs can come and go undetected. But doesn't Scotland benefit from that? Quite apart from Scotland being part of the UK and being defended as part of it, there must be a fair few civilians employed locally to look after it all.

And what's the objection anyway? Is it the age old myth that nuclear is dirty? Surely that's no basis for objection when at the same time, Scotland benefits so much from North Sea oil and gas, and the enormous petrochemical plants that process it when it arrives on land.

Which brings us down to the Yanks.

Sad to say, they are our only hope.
But lets face it, Russia is not going to target just the UK, if it went nuclear, the rest of Europe would get it in the neck as well.

You are joking aren't you ? Nuclear weapons on your doorstep makes you target no.1 when ww3 starts. Failing that a nuclear sub could have a leak sending deadly radiation out across Glasgow within minutes. I think that's a bit more serious than a bit of hydrocarbon pollution from a bit of Scottish North Sea oil?
And as for nuclear not being dirty have you any idea whatsoever regarding Fukushima in Japan being irradiated and most of the North Pacific now being dead?

Your right it would be the Americans who would be doing most of the fighting. 100% of the nuclear weapons fired at russia would be by the Americans as we aren't allowed to fire our weapons without the Americans giving us permission to do so.

So the Yanks would say we can't fire ours, but they would be firing theirs?
            The whole idea is stupid.

So it's about fear? Get rid of any defence capability and pray that Russia will make you their bitch while they steam roll over the rest of the UK? I thought the Scots were a proud bunch. Isn't there even a song called Scotland the Brave?

After getting rid of anything that might be perceived as a strategic target for its military value, next you'd have to make sure there was nothing that an enemy might consider a strategic target for crippling the economy and industry. Best be getting rid of all your oil refineries ASAP before the Russians come for them.

Well if you feel like that big man why don't you station them in your home town instead? You can become Putins first target instead or would you be too much of a bitch to do that.

Loads of reasons. None of which are anything to do with fear. Top reasons would be 1. It's not up to me. 2. If it was up to me, I'd have no idea where to begin in organising it, and 3. You'd never get a submarine out to see from here, unless you could somehow mount it on massive wheels.

If they did target clue's home town it would probably annihilate half of Scotland anyway.

May I ask, how would a nuclear sub be in Glasgow? Also, as you will have opted out of the UK , you wouldn`t have nuclear subs anyway. BUT, Scotland would be safe because of comrade Sturgeon.

I'm sure that would frighten the Russians :roflol:
