What jobs are we doing in the garden today, autumn 2016

Cut down the peas and beans. Only two bean pods to save for sowing next year (shouldn't have been so greedy with them last Sunday for dinner I suppose ).

Still have some wallflowers to transplant but that didn't happen today.

 

dug out my leafmold cage in preparation for this years leaf fall. Gunnera got another machete pruning and gathered some seeds from this and that.

 

I have been tidying pots and clearing fallen leaves, and moving the pots for overwintering in the greenhouse closer.
I was given a standard gooseberry last week, in very sad condition, decided today to remove most of the annual weeds growing in the pot and leave it till spring, my helper who wishes to remain anonymous decided it would be better pruned.

 

today was probably my last lawn mowing of the season.Brought some tender plants into the conservatory,planted a few more elephant garlic,put some fleece around the treeferns and anchored down the blowaway greenhouse.The final pond clearance can wait till the weekend...............

 

Today, I finally managed to make a start on the autumn hedging. Its at least a month later than usual due to various non-related reasons. At least the last lawn mowing of the season was a couple of weeks ago.

Finished planting 100 mixed Metallic Dutch Iris bulbs, got a further 50 to plant ( Golden Beauty, Cream Beauty, Eye of the Tiger, Mystic Beauty and Red Ember ).

Just miniature Alliums to do now but still waiting for some Black Hyacinths to be delivered.

 

Sorry to read of your eye problem @shiney , timing works well though as our gardening downtime.

 

Had a good session tidying up the herbaceous bed yesterday afternoon, most things are over now so it was mostly a matter of cutting down spent growth, thinning out a few of the more aggressive plants and dealing with any weeds which had appeared

Got a few jobs done this afternoon in the greenhouse. Cleared out the last of the peppers and basil, did my second sowing of Mizuna winter salad leaves and potted up some Tatsoi winter salad plant seedlings too.

Watered all the outdoor pots, we've had little rain here in the past week and some of them were quite dry. Gave them all a light feed while watering, some are still actively growing and it should help get them in good condition for the winter.

Finished off with a bit of leaf raking and sweeping.
