Do you think fireworks should be banned from sale to the general public?

Oh that's very kind of you @Linz. It was a few years ago now but was so angry at the time as I had specifically asked my neighbours to let me know if they were going to have fireworks (just the type to have everything that opened and shut fireworks wise!). They didn't bother to inform us, as if they had I would have walked him out instead of him standing in his stable which just might have helped matters. It was purely by chance after I heard the almighty racket that I went to check the pony and discovered him in agony. Despite equines looking big and strong their digestive system is extremely delicate and they are physically unable to be sick which doesn't help matters if they eat something they shouldn't.
I feel for all those people who have dogs who are terrified by fireworks, 1 of my terriers was, and she endured a few days of hell every year at bonfire time when I lived in Edinburgh.

I can imagine and especially after being asked, bloody cheek of it! Aw poor pony, it's another reason why I'm not fussed on setting them off anymore.. have a horse field behind so I'd rather not have something like that on my conscience.

We have a community farm close to here with all kinds of animals, and what do they do on November 5th? Have a huge firework party.

Doesn't surprise me ... when I worked on farm at the run up to Christmas, the farmer set up the contraption for killing the turkeys ...

... right next to the pen! Then wondered why they live turkeys were all running around in circles and being "difficult" to catch  :roflol:

                  Hi Pete,

I don't know about your area, but, fireworks are not only for Nov 5th, they are also being sold especially for this weekend around here.

It's The Festival of Light or Divali.
This is a special Religious Festival where Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains all put aside their differences and unite.

I agree with all of you but find it a bit difficult. I remember, as a kid, how much we enjoyed Guy Fawkes night. Admittedly, the fireworks were never as noisy as they are today and not quite as violent.

There's no doubt that they look wonderful in the skies but the noise, nowadays, is horrendous.

How about banning all fireworks that are noisy? Nervous pets can be kept indoors with the curtains closed.

I'm assuming that most pets are used to a certain amount of noise otherwise anyone who has a pet wouldn't be able to watch 'shoot em up' type films and programmes.

I think that even public displays should not be allowed to have very noisy fireworks.

But I also dislike noisy TV programmes where the audience and presenters are shouting all the time. Typically, last night, Mrs Shiney was watching 'Strictly'. Now that may be a good show to watch but I leave the room when it's on because it has such a noisy background and presenters that shout. So called 'talent shows' (admittedly, there is sometimes some good talent) are also too noisy. I'll sometimes watch those with the volume control very handy.

So, yes, I would ban fireworks but would prefer to just ban noisy ones.

As a kid I learnt not to be to free with 'bangers', even though they were nowhere near as loud as present day ones (apart from the German bombs!), by being whacked around the head by the local policeman. He caught a few of us letting them off in the street (throwing them) and whacked all of us. No point in running away as he knew all of us anyway. During the following week we got another whack 'just to make sure you remember'! :heehee:

Last year we had a dead duck flying our way and hitting the house roof then landing by the back door
No fireworks but bangs and whistles

I agree it`s only the bangs and screeches that disturb most animals, it`s lovely to watch a colourful display, but I really don`t see the point in the "bangers"

I have no problem with fireworks being used safely, but there are a few that don't care for others and the law and no one policing it till something goes wrong
