An online friend from another forum posted a link where he had won first place in your October Photo Competition. That's how I found ya'll and ya'll look like a friendly bunch of people, so I joined up.

My husband and I live in northeast Texas on 8 acres. We retired and moved here coming up 2 years ago to be closer to our daughter and her family. We have been building fence, a 36'x36' barn, we raised 3 pigs last winter-1 for us, 2 for friends. We bought 4 bred ewes last November and had 5 lambs. We kept 2 to join the flock and sold 2 and 1/2 for slaughter-we kept a half and the meat is awesome. We have a couple of horses and a mule, the horses are age 29 and 27 years old and mostly hang out and eat. We have 4 dogs, an Australian shepherd and a black Labrador/Great Dane cross that are the "house dogs" and 2 Great Pyrenees that watch the sheep and chickens. We have 10 Delaware hens, 10 red sex link hens, 5 Americana hens (got my first blue egg today!) and 1 rooster.

My vegetable garden completed it's second year. It is 100 feet by 70 feet. Our soil is called sugar sand. It is like farming on a sand dune minus the ocean. The first year was a total bust, got nothing. Second year was much better. Half of what I planted didn't come up or expired shortly thereafter. The half that did survive, half of that produced vegetables. The tomatoes did great, we got so much yellow squash that we gave lots of it away. We had green beans, butterbeans, peas, and a few banana peppers. I am greatly encouraged!

The area where we live is lush forest lands known as the Piney Woods and large grassy farms and ranches for cattle. The average annual rainfall is 46 to 54 inches, summers are real hot, winters are mild. Sometimes we get snow, but it melts after a few days. There are high tunnel greenhouses everywhere, this is a huge agricultural area.

That's a short summary, looking forward to getting to know ya'll!
